Summary

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2019 E450 4MATIC Wagon, 2017-2018 E400 4MATIC Wagon, and 2018-2019 E63S 4MATIC Wagon vehicles. The rear spoiler may detach.

 

Remedy

MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and correct the mounting of the spoiler, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began October 18, 2019. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. Note: This recall is an expansion of NHTSA recall number 18V-849. MBUSA’s number for this recall is 2019090008.

This is to notify you of a Recall Campaign Launch regarding the mounting of the tailgate spoiler on 4,765 Model Year (“MY”) 2017-2019 E-Class station wagon (S213 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on October 11, 2019.
Background
Issue		Daimler AG (“DAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2017-2019 E-Class station wagon vehicles (S213 platform), the spoiler on the tailgate might not have been mounted according to current production specification. At higher speeds, the spoiler could detach from the vehicle completely, increasing the risk of a crash or injury to other road users.
What We’re Doing		MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall.  An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will check the mounting of the rear spoiler on the affected vehicles and rework it, if necessary.
Parts		Parts are available and can be ordered as necessary.

Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new  MY17-19 E-Class station wagon vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.  Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in Star TekInfo.  Once the repair is complete, the vehicle may be sold or leased. Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired.  As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s) Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new  MY17-19 E-Class station wagon vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

SUBJECT:	Model E-Class Station Wagon vehicles (213 platform) Model Year 2017-2019 Check threaded connection of roof spoiler, rework if necessary

 

 

Daimler AG (“DAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2017-2019 E-Class Station Wagon vehicles (213 platform), the spoiler on the tailgate may not have been fastened according to current production specification. At higher speeds, the spoiler might completely detach from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash for following traffic. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will check the fastening of the tailgate spoiler, and rework, if necessary.

 

Prior to performing this Recall Campaign:

• Please check VMI to determine if the vehicle is involved in the Campaign and if it has been previously repaired.
• Please review the entire Recall Campaign bulletin and follow the repair procedure exactly as described.

 

Please note that Recall Campaigns do not expire and may also be performed on a vehicle with a vehicle status indicator.

Check/test procedure

 

1. Open liftgate.

 

2. Check that all four mounting nuts (A, figure 1) of roof spoiler threaded connection are present. Check by hand that mounting nuts are firmly seated.

   2. If the mounting nuts are present: End measure.

 

The findings from the check/test procedure must be recorded on the work order.

 

Work procedure

 

1. Remove top liftgate trim.

For basic data, see AR72.20-P-6631LWS.

There are two mounting nuts located under the liftgate trim.

 

2. Retighten existing and/or loose mounting nuts of roof spoiler threaded connection to specified torque and retrofit missing mounting nuts.

Roof spoiler is installed with four mounting nuts!

Daimler AG (“DAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Model Year (“MY”) 2017-2019 E-Class station wagon vehicles. Our records indicate that your vehicle is included in the affected population of vehicles.

What is the CONCERN?	DAG determined that on certain MY 2017-2019 E-Class station wagon vehicles (S213 platform), the spoiler on the tailgate might not have been mounted according to current production specifications. At higher speeds, the spoiler could detach from the vehicle completely, increasing the risk of a crash or injury to other road users.
What will your DEALER DO?	An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will check the mounting of the rear spoiler on the affected vehicles and rework it, if necessary on the affected vehicles. This service will be provided free of charge. We are dedicated to always delivering the best customer experience, and respect for your time is a top priority. While the minimum repair time can be up to 1 hour, your dealer can provide you with a better estimate of the overall time for this service visit.
