Chronology :
At the end of March 2023, MBAG launched initial investigations based on internal reports during vehicle end-of-line testing. MBAG found that in certain vehicles equipped with AMG performance seats, the seat wiring harness might not have been routed with the required distance between the seat frame and the fastening location.
As an immediate measure, MBAG initiated a plant campaign to check and rework vehicles that remained in MBAG’s control to reroute the seat wiring harness.
In May 2023, MBAG implemented a production adjustment to the routing of the wiring harness with reduced tolerances for vehicles equipped with AMG Performance Seats.
In parallel the ongoing root cause analysis concluded that in isolated cases, the routing of the seat wiring harness might result in the seat frame contacting the harness. Such contact could result in damage to the harness and certain wiring.
From June 2023, MBAG evaluated potential consequences of a damaged wiring harness in the affected vehicles. This analysis identified that this issue could affect the operation of the thorax-pelvis side airbag and PRESAFE impulse side airbag. In late 2023, MBAG then conducted additional investigations and testing to identify the potential failure mechanism and impact on the performance or behavior of these airbags over the vehicle’s lifetime.
Based on the above investigations and analyses, from April through May 2024, MBAG determined the potentially affected vehicle population in the field.
On May 17, 2024, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk in the identified vehicle population cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.
MBAG is aware of no field reports, warranty claims, or other information (such as the numbers of deaths and/or injuries) related to this defect worldwide.
