Summary

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2017-2022 CLA-Class, GLA-Class, GLE-Class, GLS-Class, SLC-Class, A-Class, AMG GT-Class, C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, SL-Class, GLC-Class, CLS-Class, GLB-Class, and G-Class vehicles. Please refer to MBUSA’s recall report for specific vehicle model details. An error in the communication module’s SIM card software can cause a mobile network connection failure, disabling the emergency call (eCall) system.

 

Remedy

The communication module software will be updated through an Over-the-Air (OTA) update or by a dealer, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 8, 2022. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA’s number for this recall is 2022060005.

Update Communication Module SIM Card Software

This is to notify you of the Recall Campaign Launch to update the communication module  SIM card software in 234,918 Model Year (“MY”) 2017-2022 CLA-Class, GLA-Class, GLE-/GLS-Class, SLC-Class, A-Class, AMG GT-Class, C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, SL-Class, , GLC-Class, CLS- Class , AMG GT 4-doors Coupe, GLE-Class Coupe, GLB-Class G-Class vehicles (117, 118, 156, 166, 167, 172, 177, 190, 205, 213, 217, 222, 223, 231, 238, 247, 253, 257, 290, 292, 293, , 463 platform) vehicles.  The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on June 24, 2022.

 

Issue

Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2017-2022 on the models mentioned above, the communication module’s SIM card software might inadvertently become disabled.  Should this occur, the communication module would not be able to establish a connection with a mobile phone network. In this case, both the manual and automatic eCall functions would not be available, which could preclude or delay the arrival of emergency responders. This might increase the risk of an injury following an emergency event.

 

What We’re Doing

MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. The supplier of the SIM card will update the SIM software of the communication modules on the affected vehicles. This update is planned to be performed over-the-air (“OTA”). NO ACTION is needed by Dealers.

 

Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY17-22 on the models mentioned above vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.  Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in Star TekInfo.  Once the repair is complete, the vehicle may be sold or leased.

Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired.  As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s)

Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent MY17-22 on the models mentioned above vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

No Service Action is required by the Dealer for this Campaign

Over-the-Air (“OTA”) are software updates that are performed remotely and do not require a dealer visit. Customers can continue to drive their vehicles. If the vehicle has not been driven within four weeks or more, we suggest that the ignition be cycled at least once to initialize the process. Sufficient battery charge may be required for the software update to be initialized.

Vehicles that have successfully completed OTA updates will be closed in VMI. This process will occur weekly beginning 6/24/2022. In addition, a VIN-based recall lookup tool on our MBUSA.com website offers a search feature that will indicate whether a vehicle has been subject to a safety recall, and whether that vehicle has had the free remedy performed. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.NHTSA.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on May 3, 2024.

Chronology :

In February 2020, MBAG received a first isolated field complaint (outside US) regarding a disabled SIM card, in which the customer experienced issues with the Mercedes Me Connect functions. With the receipt of additional field complaints in the following months an investigation was launched together with the supplier of the communication module. In September 2020, the sub supplier of the SIM card was able to confirm that a triggered security mechanism was the root cause of the disabled SIM cards. Following this, the investigation focused on identifying what triggered the security mechanism. From May 2021, the SIM Card supplier focused on SIM cards for North America with a specific SIM software and performed extensive tests. In September 2021, the supplier was able to narrow down the root cause to the behavior of a specific SIM software based on tests and field data. In the following month, the root cause was confirmed and an extensive analysis regarding potential effects was initiated and performed until February 2022. In March 2022, MBAG identified potentially affected vehicles with the affected SIM software.

On May 13, 2022, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.

MBAG is currently aware of 191 field reports in the US that are related to this issue that were received from May 6, 2020 to May 16, 2022

MBAG has not received any reports of crashes, injuries, or property damage, associated with this issue.

J2534 Pass-Thru

All information in regard to Mercedes-Benz J2534 compliant software is available free of charge and found under the MB Workshop Resources tab on the home page of www.startekinfo.com

J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz vehicles is available for purchase from Mercedes-Benz USA.

In order to use the J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the purchaser must furnish their own:

  • Windows based PC or laptop*
  • J2534 compliant interface box*1*

*Must be purchased from a third party company and are not available from Mercedes-Benz USA LLC.

Vehicle Coverage

J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz vehicles has coverage for all required functions associated to reprogramming, initialization, and fault clearing of emission control modules (engine and transmission) fitted to vehicles 2004 Model Year and newer. Additionally all access and functionality required in regard the configuration via SCN Coding and/or CVN Coding is covered.

J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz vehicles is delivered via DVD media which is delivered monthly for the license term of one year upon purchase.

  • All control unit software (reprogramming calibrations) is contained within J2534 DVD media.

 

Terms and conditions

J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz vehicles is purchased in 1-year license increments. During that license term the user will receive an initial software package, license key, SCN/CVN Coding information/access as well as monthly updates via DVD media.

  • Additional updates of software after the 1st year can be purchased at additional cost, however are not required for the system to continue functioning.
