Rear Seat Wiring Harness May Be Routed Incorrectly

Damaged wires may cause the rear side air bags to not deploy as intended. Additionally, the driver may not be warned if the second row right seat is not locked into place correctly after using the “Easy Entry” function. Either of these scenarios can increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

Summary

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2020 GLE 350 and GLE 450 vehicles equipped with an electrically adjustable second-row seat. The wiring harness under the seat may become pinched during seat adjustment, possibly causing damage to the wires.

 

Remedy

MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and reroute the wiring harness as necessary, and repair any wire damage, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2020. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA’s number for this recall is 2020050009.

Background
Issue		Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2020 GLE-Class (167 platform) vehicles  equipped with an electrically adjustable second row seat, the wiring harness under the second row right seat might not be routed according to current production  specifications.  The wiring harness could be damaged if the second row right seat is moved in a longitudinal direction. Thus, for vehicles equipped with rear side airbags, the side airbag for this seat might not deploy as intended, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash.   Furthermore, the driver may not be warned if the second seat row would not have been locked correctly again after using the “Easy-Entry” function. This would increase the risk of injury to occupants on the second and third seat row in the event of an accident. In the event the wires for the side airbag were to become damaged, the customer would be made aware of the issue by a SRS warning message in the instrument cluster.
What We’re Doing		MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall.  An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will check the routing of the wiring harness, correct it if necessary and repair any potentially existing damage on the wiring harness.
Parts		Remedy is not available at this time. An additional notification will be sent once the remedy is available.

Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY20 GLE-Class vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.  Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in Star TekInfo.  Once the repair is complete the vehicle may be sold or leased. Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired.  Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent MY20 GLE-Class vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

Please note that Recall Campaigns do not expire and may also be performed on a vehicle with a vehicle status indicator.

Check/test procedure

 

1. Remove the wiring harness cover (A, figure 1) of the right-hand second seat row (40% side).

2. Check to see if the mounting clip for the wiring harness is positioned correctly on the holder (B, figure 2). (Figure 2) shows the OK condition.

The mounting clip may be positioned incorrectly on the holder and was installed so that it is turned by 90° (C, figure 3, not OK).

The wiring harness must not be in contact with the guide rail.

1. The mounting clip is positioned correctly: End measure.
2. The mounting clip is not positioned correctly: Carry out work procedure.

 

Work procedure

1. Cut through the cable strap for the mounting clip using a side cutting pliers.

The protective sleeve and individual lines must not be damaged when doing this.

 

2. Check the protective sleeve and the individual lines for damage.

Repair the wiring harness and/or the protective sleeve if they have been damaged.

Use fabric tape to repair the protective sleeve.

Use a line connector to repair the wiring harness.

 

3. Then use a new mounting clip to position the wiring harness correctly as shown in Figure 2.

 

4. Assemble in reverse order.

Mercedes-Benz AG (“M BAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Model Year 2020 GLE–Class. Our records indicate that your vehicle is included in the affected population of vehicles.

What is the CONCERN?	On certain Model Year (“MY”) 2020 GLE–Class vehicles equipped with an electrically adjustable second row seat, the wiring harness under the second row right seat might not be routed properly and could become damaged if that seat is moved frontwards or rearwards. A damaged wiring harness could affect certain safety functions. For vehicles equipped with rear side airbags, the side airbag for this seat might not deploy as intended, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash. Also, the driver may not be warned if the second seat row is not locked correctly again after using the “EasyEntry” function. This could increase the risk of injury to occupants on the second and third seat row in the event of a crash. However, if the wires for the side airbag were to become damaged, the driver would be made aware of the issue by a SRS warning message in the instrument cluster.
What will your DEALER DO?	An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will check the routing of the wiring harness, correct it if necessary, and repair any potentially existing damage on the wiring harness.
