Summary

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2020 AMG GT vehicles. The emergency call system (eCall) communication module may be missing the wiring harness ground line, which may cause the system to relay an inaccurate vehicle location, and restrict the ability to communicate verbally with the call center.

 

Remedy

MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will repair the wiring harness of the communication module, free of charge. The recall began July 2, 2020. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA’s number for this recall is 2020060010.

This is to notify you of a new Recall Campaign to rework wiring harness for communication module in 149 Model Year (“MY”) 2020 AMG GT-Class (190 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “PENDING” on April 28, 2020.
Background
Issue		Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2020 AMG GT-Class (190 platform) vehicles, a ground line in the wiring harness of the communication module for the emergency call system (eCall) may not have been installed. If the ground line is not installed, the ground connection of the communication module might be unintentionally established via the shielding of the microphone. Since the microphone’s shielding is not designed as a ground connection, the function of the communication module cannot be permanently ensured. Thus, in the event of an automatically or manually triggered emergency call, the determination of the vehicle position might be restricted. In addition, the ability of the vehicle occupants to communicate with the call center verbally could be impaired or prevented. As a consequence, emergency responders might not be guided to the vehicle. This might increase the risk of an injury following an emergency event. The customer might be made aware of a malfunction of the emergency call system by a SOS message in the instrument cluster.
What We’re Doing		MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall.  An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will rework the wiring harness of the communication module on the affected vehicles.
Parts		Remedy is not available at this time. An additional notification will be sent once the remedy is available.

Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY20 AMG GT-Class vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.  Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in Star TekInfo.  Once the repair is complete the vehicle may be sold or leased. Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired.  Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent MY20 AMG GT-Class vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain Model Year (“MY”) 2020 AMG GT-Class vehicles.  Our records indicate that your vehicle is included in the affected population of vehicles.

 

What is the Concern?

In certain MY 2020 AMG GT-Class (190 platform) vehicles, a ground line in the wiring harness of the communication module for the emergency call system (eCall) may not have been installed.  In this case, the communication module may not function as intended.  In the event of an automatically or manually triggered emergency call, the determination of the vehicle position may not work correctly. In addition, the ability of the vehicle occupants to communicate with the call center verbally could be impaired or prevented.  As a consequence, emergency responders might not be guided to the vehicle.  This might increase the risk of an injury following an emergency event.  The customer might be made aware of a malfunction of the emergency call system by a SOS message in the instrument cluster

An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will repair the wiring harness of the communication module on the affected vehicles.  

Unfortunately, the parts to remedy this are not yet available.  We are working to obtain the necessary parts to correct this condition as quickly as possible.  As parts become available, we will send you another letter asking you to take your vehicle to an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer to have the recall completed free of charge.

Work procedure 

 

1. Clamp off ground line.

 

2. Expose HERMES control unit.

3. Detach plug (A, figure 2) from soft top control unit.

4. Disconnect existing cable (brown) from PIN C connection from chamber 8 (figure 4) and connect in free chamber of the socket housing of wiring harness A190 540 26 09 (1, figure 3).
5. Insert loose pin (B, figure 3) of the aftermarket ground wiring harness into chamber 8 (C, figure 4) of the lower row and reconnect plug to soft top control unit.

6. Route pin (D, figure 3) of the ground wiring harness to the HERMES control unit as outlined in steps 6-7

 

7. Disconnect plug (E, figure 5) from HERMES control unit and remove contact carrier.

7. Insert loose pin (D, figure 3) of the ground wiring harness into chamber 26 (F, figure 6), complete plug and connect to HERMES control unit.

8. Fasten ground line with additional cable ties.

 

9. Assemble in reverse order.

 

10. Connect ground line.

 

11. Clear fault memory and check soft top for proper operation.
