Summary

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2018 S560 and S450 vehicles. These vehicles may be equipped with front brake components (brake discs, calipers, and pads) with different dimensions than specified for the vehicle.

 

Remedy

MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front brake system, free of charge. The recall began May 8, 2020. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA’s number for this recall is 2020030020.

This is to notify you of a Recall Campaign Launch regarding the front axle brake system in 75 Model Year (“MY”) 2018 S-Class (222 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers.  Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on May 1, 2020.
Background
Issue		Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 18 S-Class vehicles (222 platform), the front axle might be equipped with brakes which do not meet current production specifications (brake disc, brake caliper, brake pads).  Nevertheless, the legal requirements regarding brake performance and brake regulating functions are still fulfilled. If equipped with a front axle brake system that has an incorrect brake specifications, vehicle maintenance might not be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
What We’re Doing		MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will replace the replace the front axle brake system on the affected vehicles.

Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY18 S-Class vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.  Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in Star TekInfo.  Once the repair is complete the vehicle may be sold or leased. Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired.  Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent MY18 S-Class vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 18 S-Class vehicles (222 platform), the front axle might be equipped with brakes which do not meet current production specifications (brake disc, brake caliper, brake pads). Nevertheless, the legal requirements regarding brake performance and brake regulating functions are still fulfilled. If equipped with a front axle brake system that has an incorrect brake specifications, vehicle maintenance might not be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will replace the front axle brake system on the affected vehicles.

 

Prior to performing this Recall Campaign:

• VMI must always be checked before performing campaigns to verify that the campaign is required on a specific vehicle. Always check for any other open campaigns, and perform accordingly.
• Please review the entire Recall Campaign bulletin and follow the repair procedure exactly as described.

Please note that Recall Campaigns do not expire and may also be performed on a vehicle with a vehicle status indicator.

2. Replace front axle brake calipers and brakepads.

For basic data on replacing brake caliper, see AR42.10-P-0070LF.  For basic data on changing brakepad, see AR42.10-P-1600LF.

 

3. Assemble in reverse order.

Dear Mercedes-Benz Owner,

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Model Year (“MY”) 2018 S-Class vehicles.  Our records indicate that your vehicle is included in the affected population of vehicles.

 

What is the Concern?

MBAG has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 18 S-Class vehicles (222 platform), the front axle may be equipped with front brake components (brake discs, calipers, and pads) with different dimensions than specified for the vehicle.  Incorrectly sized brake components could lead to the wrong replacement components being fitted to the vehicle during brake repairs, possibly affecting braking performance and increasing the risk of a crash.

An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will replace the front axle brake system on the affected vehicles.

Unfortunately, parts to remedy this issue are not yet available. We are working to obtain the necessary parts as quickly as possible.  As parts become available, we will send you another letter asking you to take your vehicle to an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer to have the recall completed free of charge.
