Perform SCN Coding for EngineĀ Control Unit
This is to notify you of an Emission Service Campaign launch to update the SCN coding for SCR and VGS on 3,704 Model Year (“MY”) 2009-2012 ML-Class, R-Class, and S-Class (164/166, 251, 221 platforms) vehicles. The vehicles will be visible and flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on December 12, 2023.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (āMYā) 2009-2012 GL-Class, ML-Class, R-Class, and S-Class (164/166, 251, 221 platforms) vehicles, the coding for the engine control unit does not correspond to the specifications as part of the āBlueTEC updateā diesel field measure (aka āEmission Modificationā). This could result in the VIN number not being read out from the vehicle. This could affect the vehicle smog check.
What Weāre Doing
MBUSA will conduct an Emission Service Campaign in which an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will update the SCN coding for the engine control unit on the affected vehicles.
Parts
Parts are not required for this campaign since the remedy is software based
Perform SCN Coding for Engine Control Unit
- Always use the latest XENTRY Diagnosis software release with all available add-ons.
- Follow the operation steps exactly as described in XENTRY Diagnosis.
- Use a charger to ensure sufficient power supply to the vehicleās on-board electrical system battery (greater than 12.5 V).
- If XENTRY Diagnosis is already connected to the vehicle, start with Work Procedure step 2.
If two or more software updates or SCN codings are performed during a single workshopĀ visit, operation items 02-4762 and 02-5058 may be invoiced only on one of the workshop orders.
Work Procedure
- Connect XENTRY Diagnosis.
DAS screen (model 164; 221; 251)
- Perform SCN coding in engine control unit.
To do this, select menu item “Quick test view ā CDI60LS Common rail diesel injection ā Control unit adaptations – Variant coding āSCN coding”.
Then follow the user guidance in XENTRY Diagnosis.
XENTRY screen (model 166)
- Perform SCN coding in engine control unit.
To do this, select menu item “Quick test view – N3/9 engine electronics CDI60LS ā Adaptations – Control unit update ā Updating of SCN coding”.
Then follow the user guidance in XENTRY Diagnosis.
- Disconnect XENTRY Diagnosis.

J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz vehicles is available for purchase from Mercedes-Benz USA.
In order to use the J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the purchaser must furnish their own:
- Windows based PC or laptop*
- J2534 compliant interface box*1*
*Must be purchased from a third party company and are not available from Mercedes-Benz USA LLC.

Vehicle Coverage
J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz vehicles has coverage for all required functions associated to reprogramming, initialization, and fault clearing of emission control modules (engine and transmission) fitted to vehicles 2004 Model Year and newer. Additionally all access and functionality required in regard the configuration via SCN Coding and/or CVN Coding is covered.
J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz vehicles is delivered via DVD media which is delivered monthly for the license term of one year upon purchase.
- All control unit software (reprogramming calibrations) is contained within J2534 DVD media.
Terms and conditions
J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz vehicles is purchased in 1-year license increments. During that license term the user will receive an initial software package, license key, SCN/CVN Coding information/access as well as monthly updates via DVD media.
- Additional updates of software after the 1st year can be purchased at additional cost, however are not required for the system to continue functioning.
