Inspect Front Axle Wiring Harness
This is to notify you of the Recall Campaign Launch to inspect the front axle wiring harness on 26,116 Model Year (โMYโ) 2019-2022 G-Class (463 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz
AG (โMBAGโ), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (โMYโ) 2019-2022 G-Class (463 platform) vehicles, the front axle wiring harness might contact an auxiliary oil cooler and chafe. This could potentially damage the wiring harness over time. As a result, impairment of ABS and ESP functionality cannot be ruled out, which could potentially increase the risk of a crash. If the failure occurs, the driver would be made aware through an indicator lamp or warning message in the instrument cluster.
What Weโre Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealership will inspect the front axle wiring harness on the affected vehicles and replace it, if necessary. After inspection if the wiring harness is not replaced a protective sleeve will be installed.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed. The predicted use rate for the cable tie and adhesive tape is 32%. The predicted replacement rate for the electrical wiring harness is 0.5%.
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as โOPENโ and Work Instructions will be available in NetStar VMI and Xentry Portal. Once the repair is complete the vehicle may be sold or leased.
Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s).
Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.
Check electrical wiring harness for front axle in front right fender, rework and replace if necessary
Check/test procedure

- Remove front engine compartment lining (Figure 3).
- Unclip wiring harness from wheel arch at right trailing arm and place inwards in engine compartment (Figure 4). Hang wiring harness downwards vertically.
For V8 engines, the retaining clamp (D, Figure 5) of the circulation pump must also be removed, press circulation pump slightly to one side to access the wiring harness.
- Remove the fabric insulating tape between the cable ties (E and F, Figure 6) and check all exposed individual cables for damage.
a. If none of the individual cables in the exposed area are damaged: Carry out Work Procedure A.
b. If one or more individual cables in the exposed area are damaged: Carry out Work Procedure B.
Work Procedure A
- Freshly wrap exposed individual cables with fabric insulating tape and attach anti-chafe hose to wiring harness between the cable ties.
- Wrap the anti-chafe hose at the ends with fabric insulating tape to the wiring harness (Figure 8)
- Route wiring harness via right trailing arm into wheel arch, clip back into the retaining clips and connect (Figure 9).
- Assemble in reverse order.
Work Procedure B
- Replace front axle electrical wiring harness.
New front axle wiring harness is supplied with all mounting clips or cable ties in the correct assembly position.

Chronology :
In February 2022, Mercedes-Benz
AG began a review of isolated field reports by owners of G-Class vehicles, who stated they had observed an ABS and ESP indicator lamp in the instrument cluster. No related crashes, third-party damages, or personal injuries were reported. MBAG requested parts from the affected vehicles for further analysis.
From March through May 2022, based on its investigation and analysis of the parts collected from the field, MBAG determined that, in the analyzed cases, the front axle wiring harness had come into contact and chafed on an auxiliary oil cooler causing damage to the wiring harness.
In April 2022, to guard against such potential chafing, MBAG made a production adjustment, installing a protective sleeve on the potentially affected section of the wiring harness of all G-Class vehicles.
In parallel MBAG carried out systematic analysis of potentially affected signal wires for each possible wiring harness configuration. As part of the analyses, all functions of corresponding signal wires of the various wiring harness variants were checked and examined with regard to safety-relevant effects. In the course of this analysis MBAG determined that safety relevant consequences are limited to the potential impairment of the ABS and ESP brake system functionality. These investigations were completed by the end of 2022.
On February 10, 2023, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk could not be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.
MBAG is currently aware of 12 warranty claims potentially related to this case between January 01, 2020 and July 6, 2021 and no other field reports regarding this defect in the US. MBAG is not aware of any reported crashes or personal injury in connection with this issue.

This is to notify you of the new Recall Campaign to check the front axle wiring harness on 26,116 Model Year (โMYโ) 2019-2022 G-Class (463 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as โPENDINGโ on February 24, 2023.
Background
After inspection if the wiring harness is not replaced a protective sleeve will be installed,

In February 2022, Mercedes-Benz AG began a review of isolated field reports by owners of G-Class vehicles, who stated they had observed an ABS and ESP indicator lamp in the instrument cluster.
