Issue
Mercedes-Benz
AG (โMBAGโ), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (โMYโ) 2022 EQS (297 platform) vehicles, the multi-purpose camera and the rearview mirror may be insufficiently attached to the windshield and might detach, impairing front passenger air bag deployment and various assistance systems, including Adaptive Cruise Control (DISTRONIC) with active steering assist, Brake Assist with pedestrian detection, Lane Keeping Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, Augmented Reality function and Rain and Light Sensors. Impaired deployment of an air bag could increase the risk of injury, and impaired driver assistance safety systems could increase the risk of a crash.
What Weโre Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealership will replace the windshield and reinstall the multi-purpose camera and rearview mirror.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed.
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Chronology :
At the end of June 2022, MBAG received a report from vehicle production, describing an instance in which a single vehicle with an insufficiently mounted multi-purpose camera was detected.
In July 2022, MBAG started initial analyses together with the supplier to identify the failure mechanism and root cause. In parallel, windshields in storage and vehicles in the production plant were inspected in order to identify any additional parts that may exhibit the subject issue.
Upon further analysis, the adhesive joint between the multi-purpose camera, interior mirror and the windshield might not meet the specified strength requirements.
From August 2022 onwards, test drives were conducted in order to investigate potential consequences of an adhesive joint not meeting the specified strength to vehicle functions and potential impact to occupant safety.
At the same time, the situation was analyzed in the field.
From October 2022 onwards, the failure mechanism of an adhesive joint that does not meet specifications was investigated with material experts in order to identify whether a potential loosening of the components would occur at a very early point in a vehicleโs lifetime, i.e. whether the issue would be safely detected during the vehicle production and logistics process.
In January 2023, additional analyses concluded that a loosening of the multi-purpose camera and interior mirror after vehicle delivery cannot be ruled out.
On February 3, 2023, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.
MBAG can confirm there are no warranty claims, field or service reports, and other information (such as the numbers of deaths and/or injuries) related to this defect in the USA.

At the end of June 2022, MBAG received a report from vehicle production, describing an instance in which a single vehicle with an insufficiently mounted multi-purpose camera was detected.
In July 2022, MBAG started initial analyses together with the supplier to identify the failure mechanism and root cause. In parallel, windshields in storage and vehicles in the production plant were inspected in order to identify any additonal parts that may exhibit the subject issue.
The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR ยง573 Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-074

Description of the Defect : Mercedes-Benz
AG (โMBAGโ), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (โMYโ) 2022 EQS (297 platform) vehicles, the bonding of the multi-purpose camera and the interior mirror to the windshield might not meet current production specifications.
FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR
Description of the Safety Risk : In this case, the multi-purpose camera as well as the interior mirror might
partially or completely detach from the windshield.
If the multi-purpose camera partially detaches, the function of several assistance systems such as DISTRONIC with active steering assist, Brake Assists with pedestrian detection, Lane Keeping Assists, Traffic Sign Assist, Augmented Reality function and Rain and Light Sensor function might be impaired, which could increase the risk of a crash.
A multi-purpose camera as well as interior mirror that has completely
detached from the windshield, might enter the deployment zone of the frontal Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-074 Page 2 airbags. Thus, the risk of injury for vehicle occupants might increase in the event of a crash with an airbag deployment.
Description of the Cause : Due to a production deviation at a supplier, the affected adhesive joints might not exhibit the required bonding strength. Identification of Any Warning
that can Occur : The driver will not receive a warning due to the nature of the failure mechanism. Involved Components : Component Name 1 : windshield Component Description : windshield Component Part Number : A2976708200 Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer

In January 2023, additional analyses concluded that a loosening of the multi-purpose camera and interior The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR ยง573 Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-074

mirror after vehicle delivery cannot be ruled out.
On February 3, 2023, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall. MBAG can confirm there are no warranty claims, field or service reports, and other information (such as the numbers of deaths and/or injuries) related to this defect in the USA.
Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : An authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealership will inspect the windshield on
the affected vehicles and replace it, if necessary. The existing multi- purpose camera and interior mirror will be mounted to the new windshield carrier plate.
Pursuant to 49 C.F.R. ยง 577.11(e), MBUSA does not plan to provide notice about pre-notice reimbursement to owners since none of the involved vehicles would have been previously subject to the condition described and all remain covered under the new vehicle warranty How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The bonding of the multi-purpose camera and the interior mirror to the windshield meet current production specifications.
Remedy Parts: A2976709800 windshield Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : A change in the production procedure of our supplier ensures that this issue can no longer occur from July 6, 2022 onwards.
