Replace Rearview Camera
This is to notify you of an initial Recall Campaign to replace the rearview camera on approximately 17,045 MY16-18 Mercedes-Benz Metris vans. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. All affected VINs will be flagged as “PENDING” in VMI and cannot be sold.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vans, has determined that on certain Mercedes-Benz
VS20 Metris vehicles (platform 447), a hardware defect in a memory chip within the rear view camera may cause the camera image in the rear view display to freeze. In this case, the rear view display might not show an accurate and reliable view to the driver of the areas behind the vehicle. As a result, the driver might not be able to see certain objects behind the vehicle, which could increase the risk of a crash while backing up.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA is conducting a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz Metris dealer will replace the rear view camera on the affected vehicles. As an intermediate solution an authorized Mercedes-Benz
Metris dealer will conduct a Software Update on the affected vehicles to significantly lower the probability of failure occurrence. In case of failure occurrence, the software update would also lead to a black screen instead of a frozen image to further mitigate the safety risk until sufficient numbers of replacement parts are available.
Parts
Neither the software for the intermediate solution, nor replacement rearview cameras are available yet.
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for a dealer to sell or lease any new Metris vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.
Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired.
Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for rental companies to rent new Metris vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.
In April 2020, MBAG started to receive customer complaints alleging frozen images on the rear view camera display.
MBAG commenced an investigation to evaluate the complaints and to determine whether they could be related.
MBAG sought out and retrieved available parts that workshops had removed from vehicles that reported the rearview camera screen freezing, and provided those to the component supplier for further analysis.
In parallel, MBAG tested other vehicles of the same model, trying to produce the reported failure for examination and analysis.
For several months, the engineering team was unable to produce the reported failure. In October 2020, following extensive testing on the test stand and the plant premises, MBAG was able to observe the failure in a vehicle for the first time. However, it remained unclear what triggered the frozen screen, and the engineering team was unable to intentionally produce the phenomenon. Based on MBAG’s testing and field reports, the occurrence of a frozen screen appears to be both random and rare. This supported MBAG’s determination that the probability of the occurrence was very low.
During the same period, the supplier conducted its own analysis. It was able to generate and observe the failure for the first time in January 2021.
Further analyses by MBAG and the supplier in the following months determined that frozen images were likely caused by a defect in a camera memory chip. A faulty signal from the chip could cause the processor to crash, resulting in a frozen screen, however at this point it was still unclear how and when this failure would occur.
This determination allowed MBAG investigators to recreate the failure more frequently, in order to determine what factors and conditions might lead to the failure in vehicles in the field.
After additional testing conducted by the supplier and MBAG, the supplier determined that two failure paths could potentially lead to a frozen image. In approximately 80 % of cases, the failure occurs during the camera calibration process during vehicle operation (background operation of rearview camera during forward travel at the rate of 3 to 19 mph). In the remaining 20 % of cases, the failure occurs, when the camera is switched on while the vehicle remains stationary or speed is below 3 mph.
In the course of that additional testing and analysis, MBAG further determined that the probability of screen freeze is higher in colder outdoor temperatures.
In parallel over the course of several months during 2021, MBAG and the supplier worked to design, develop, and test potential solutions. After extensive additional testing and analysis, a specific software update solution was developed and successfully tested.
In case of the failure path involving online calibration (80% of failure cases), the software would prevent the failure from occurring and the camera would work as intended. In case of the other failure path that occurs when the vehicle is stationary (remaining 20 % of failure cases), the software would automatically switch off the camera if the failure is detected, preventing a frozen image.
On February 16, 2022, MBAG determined that it could not rule out a safety risk associated with rear view camera screens installed in certain VS20 Platform 447 Metris vehicles.
Accordingly, MBAG will initiate a recall for all affected VS20 Metris vehicles.

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL INTERIM NOTICE This notice applies to your vehicle VIN: Replace Rear View Camera NHTSA Recall #22V099 March, 2022 Dear Valued Mercedes-Benz Metris Owner: This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Mercedes-Benz
AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Metris vans, has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Model Year (“MY”) 2016-2018 Mercedes-Benz
Metris vehicles. Our records indicate that your vehicle is included in the affected population of vehicles. What’s the Issue? MBAG has determined that on certain Mercedes-Benz
Metris vehicles, the rear view display might not show an accurate and reliable view of the areas behind the vehicle to the driver. As a result, the driver might not be able to see certain objects behind the vehicle, which could increase the risk of a crash while the vehicle is backing up. To remedy this, an authorized Mercedes-Benz
Metris dealer will replace the rear view camera on the affected vehicles. Unfortunately, the parts to remedy this issue are currently not yet available. However, as an interim solution, an authorized Mercedes-Benz
Metris dealer will conduct a software update on the affected vehicles to significantly lower the probability of the failure to occur. A black screen will result instead of a frozen image if the failure occurs after the software has been updated to emphasize to the driver to rely on the outside rearview mirrors when backing up. This will further mitigate the safety risk until sufficient replacement parts are available. We are working to obtain the necessary parts to correct this condition as quickly as possible. As the interim software becomes available, we will send you a letter asking you to take your vehicle to an authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealer to have the interim remedy completed free of charge. Then, once the replacement camera’s become available in sufficient quantities, we will send you an additional letter to have the final recall remedy completed, also free of charge. Should you have any concerns or questions regarding your vehicle before you receive the next recall letter when parts are available, please contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealer. If for any reason a dealer is unable to remedy your situation, we are always happy to hear from you. Please contact us at 1-800-367-6372.
