Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2016- 2020 platform vehicles (see detailed models below) with a gasoline engine, a leak may develop between the fuel rail and fuel injector due to trapped debris from the production process, which could affect the safety and emissions of the vehicle. Trapped debris might damage the seal between the fuel rail and fuel injector, which over the life of the vehicle, might result in a fuel leak into the engine compartment. Leaking fuel from this area might contact hot parts of the engine and therefore a risk of a fire cannot be ruled out. This may also result in the illumination of a malfunction indicator lamp (‘MIL) if the fuel rail pressure deviation exceeds thresholds. The fuel odor may also be perceptible by the occupants.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will replace the fuel rail and fuel injectors on the affected vehicles

Chronology :
Due to isolated field complaints involving alleged fuel leakage (one single complaint received from a US dealer at end of January 2020 in which the customer noticed a fuel odor, however the vehicle was registered in the Canadian market), camera images from the production process of fuel rail and fuel injector components were evaluated for potential deviations from specifications. Images were evaluated by both manual screening and image recognition software. By the end of February 2021, several million camera images from the production process were evaluated. Images of the fuel rails identified the potential for particle inclusions in the produced fuel rail components. It was also determined during this review that a process change in August 2020 that was part of continuous process improvement prevented the risk of particle inclusions from reoccurring.
Subsequently, from March to April 2021, the isolated field complaints were reviewed and traced back to inclusions identified in fuel rails that were detected by the analysis of camera images. The analysis showed that these were small plastic and metal particles.
From May to July 2021, the production plant and the development department analyzed whether the particles identified in fuel rails could lead to a leak in the seal between the fuel rail and the fuel injector. This analysis determined that it could not be ruled out that trapped sharp-edged particles could work their way into the seal over the vehicle’s operating life.
In the following months, potential effects of leaking fuel from the seal between the fuel rail and fuel injector were investigated for a potential safety risk.
On December 03, 2021, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall. To date Mercedes-Benz is only aware of the one aforementioned customer complaint in the US.

In certain MY16-20 CLA-Class, GLA-Class, GLE/GLS-Class, A-Class, C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, SL-Class, E-Class Coupe/Convertible, GLB-Class, GLC-Class, CLS-Class, AMG GT 4-doors Coupe and G-Class vehicles with a gasoline engine, a leak may develop between the fuel rail and fuel injector due to trapped debris from the production process, which could affect the safety and emissions of the vehicle. Trapped debris might damage the seal between the fuel rail and fuel injector, which over the life of the vehicle, might result in a fuel leak into the engine compartment. Leaking fuel from this area might contact hot parts of the engine and increase the risk of a fire . This may also result in the illumination of a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (‘MIL) if the fuel rail pressure deviation exceeds the thresholds. Vehicle occupants may also smell a fuel odor. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will replace the fuel rail and fuel injectors on the affected vehicles. Unfortunately, the parts to remedy this are not yet available. We are working to obtain the necessary parts to correct this condition as quickly as possible. When the parts becomes available, we will send you another letter asking you to take your vehicle to an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer to have the recall completed free of charge. Should you have any concerns or questions regarding your vehicle before you receive the next recall letter when the software is available, please contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer. If for any reason a dealer is unable to remedy your situation, we are always happy to hear from you. Please contact us at 1-800-367-6372. A vehicle identification number (VIN)-based recall lookup tool on our MBUSA.com website offers a search function that will indicate whether a vehicle has been subj ect to a safety recall, and whether that vehicle has had the free remedy performed. Please visit www.MBUSA.com/recall. If you are no longer the vehicle owner, or have a change of address, please complete the reverse side of this letter and return the complete letter in the enclosed envelope. If this is a leased vehicle and the lessor and registered owner receive this notice, please forward this information by first class mail to the lessee within 1 0 days to comply with federal regulations. If a Mercedes-Benz dealer for any reason is unable to remedy the situation without charge, or within a reasonable amount of time, pursuant to law 49 U.S.C. Chapter 301, you may submit a complaint to the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1200 New Jersey Avenue, S.E., Washington, D.C. 20590 or call the toll-free Auto Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153); or go to http:/ /www.safercar.gov. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer, will replace the fuel rail and fuel injectors on the affected vehicles. Pursuant to 49 C.F.R. § 577.11(e), MBUSA does plan to provide notice about pre-notice reimbursement to owners since most of the involved vehicles would have been previously subject to the condition described and customers who have already paid to have this recall condition corrected may be eligible to receive reimbursement.
