December 1, 2021 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 21V933000
Fender Liner May Damage Brake Hose
A damaged brake hose may leak brake fluid, extending the distance needed to stop the vehicle and increasing the risk of a crash.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V933
Manufacturer Daimler Vans USA, LLC
Components SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC, STRUCTURE
Potential Number of Units Affected 98
Summary
Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Freightliner
Sprinter vehicles. The front axle fender liner and brake hose may be too close, allowing the fender liner to contact and damage the brake hose.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect the condition and clearance of the brake hose, modify the fender liner trim, and replace the brake hose as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on March 4, 2022. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267. DVUSA’s number for this recall is VS3BAURAVE.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

Replace Front Brake Hoses and Fender Liners
This is to notify you of an initial Recall Campaign to replace front brake hoses and fender liners on approximately 85 MY21 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. All affected VINs will be flagged as “PENDING” in VMI and cannot be sold.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
and Freightliner
vans, has determined that on certain Sprinter vehicles, the rear portion of the fender liner on the front axle could contact and chafe the brake hose. If the distance between the fender liner and the brake hose is not sufficient, the front wheel suspension could contact and chafe the brake hose, which could lead to the loss of brake fluid. Over time, if the operator ignores the brake fluid warning indicator and continues to operate the vehicle until the brake fluid empties, the stopping distance may lengthen which could increase the risk of a crash.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA is conducting a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz Sprinter dealer will check the condition and clearance of the brake hoses and, if necessary, replace them. Additionally, the corresponding fender liner will be modified accordingly on the respective side.
Parts
Parts are not yet available
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for a dealer to sell or lease any new Sprinter vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.
Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired.
Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for rental companies to rent new Sprinter vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.
Customer Notification Timeline
An owner notification letter to be mailed in December, 2021.
Chronology :
On March 18, 2020 MBAG launched recall number 20V181 concerning the subject “Brake hose front axle and fender liner” covering approximately 48,775 VS30 Sprinter vehicles (platform 907).
The remedy proceeded in several phases, as MBAG plants in Germany and in the US went through process and design revisions to optimize the solution.
During a Customer Product Audit (CPA) in the Charleston plant in April 2021, a Sprinter vehicle was determined to have a similar production error: the fender liner on the front axle touched and thus could chafe the brake hose.
MBAG initiated an investigation, and as a precautionary measure, immediately quarantined potentially affected in-production Sprinter Platform 907 vehicles. The Charleston plant inspected all vehicles quarantined for this potential error, and released them for sale after remedying the error.
The investigation determined that after the final design deviation approval in 2020, there was a delay in fully implementing that final change in the Charleston plant. The resulting fender liner-shell mismatch caused the fender liner to chafe against the brake line in some vans produced in Charleston.
In June 2021, MBAG started an additional analysis to determine the period and the potentially affected vehicle population.
Based on this analysis, on November 24, 2021, MBAG decided that a safety related concern could not be ruled out for approximately 98 vans produced at the Charleston plant in the spring of 2021. As a result, MBAG will initiate a recall of affected VS30 Sprinter vehicles.

Production Dates : MAR 30, 2021 – MAY 04, 2021 VIN Range 1 : Begin : NR End : NR Not sequential Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vans, has determined that on certain Sprinter platform 907 vehicles (VS30) the rear part of the fender liner on the front axle could touch and chafe the brake hose. FMVSS 1 : NR Part 573 Safety Recall Report 21V-933 Page 2 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : If the distance between the fender liner and the brake hose is not sufficient, the front wheel suspension could make contact with the brake hose, which could lead to chafing of the brake hose and the loss of brake fluid. Over time, if the operator were to ignore the brake fluid warning indicator and continue to operate the vehicle until the brake fluid runs dry, this could extend the vehicle’s braking distance and increase the risk of a crash. Description of the Cause : NR Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : The driver may observe extended braking pedal travel and a soft brake pedal. The instrument cluster will indicate low brake fluid through illumination of a red warning message. Involved Components : Component Name 1 : Brake Hose Component Description : Brake Hose Front Axle Left/Right Component Part Number : A9074284200 Component Name 2 : Fender Liner Component Description : Fender Liner Left Component Part Number : A9076840200 Component Name 3 : Fender Liner Component Description : Fender Liner Right Component Part Number : A9076840300 Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : NR Address : NR NR Country : NR Part 573 Safety Recall Report 21V-933 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Chronology : On March 18, 2020 MBAG launched recall number 20V181 concerning the subject “Brake hose front axle and fender liner” covering approximately 48,775 VS30 Sprinter vehicles (platform 907). Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Mercedes-Benz customers affected by this measure will be informed about the recall and the necessary next steps in writing and will receive advance notice through an interim customer notification. An authorized Mercedes-Benz Sprinter dealer will check the condition and clearance of the brake hoses and, if necessary, replace them and trim the corresponding fender liner. Pursuant to 49 C.F.R. § 577.11(e), Daimler Vans does not plan to provide notice about pre-notice reimbursement to owners since all involved vehicles remain covered under the new vehicle warranty. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : An authorized Mercedes-Benz Sprinter dealer will check the condition and clearance of the brake hoses and, if necessary, replace them and trim the corresponding fender liner. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 21V-933 Page 4 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : In May 2021, it was ensured in the Charleston plant that fender liner and brake hose are mounted in the correct position. Recall Schedule : Description of Recall Schedule : Dealers will be notified of the pending voluntary recall campaign approximately in January 2022. A copy of all communications will be provided to NHTSA when available. Owners will be notified approximately one week after the recall launches to dealers.
