Summary
Mercedes-Benz
USA, LLC. (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2019-2020 G550 4MATIC and G63 AMG 4MATIC vehicles. An electrical resistor within the differential locking module may malfunction, interrupting communication between the control unit and the differential locking actuator, possibly resulting in the deactivation of the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) while driving.
Remedy
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the differential locking modules and replace them as necessary, free of charge. An interim letter informing owners of the safety risk was mailed March 27, 2020. A second notice will be sent once the remedy is available. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
Check if your Mercedes-Benz has a Recall

This is to notify you of a Recall Campaign Launch regarding the control unit of the differential locking module in 6,300 Model Year (“MY”) 20192020 G-Class (463 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on August 14, 2020.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz
AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2019-2020 G-Class vehicles (463 platform), the control unit of the differential locking module might not meet current production specifications. The electrical contact of a specific resistor might be impaired due to sulfur fumes originating from the axle oil. If the resistor is impaired, the electrical currents would have a higher value than what actually exists. As a result, the communication between the control unit and the locking actuator will shut down and the differential locking status might no longer be reliably determined. Both ESP and ABS systems would then be deactivated which could increase the risk of a crash under certain operating conditions. The customer will be made aware of the issue by an ABS and ESP message in the instrument cluster.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealer will check the differential locking modules on the affected vehicles and replace them, if necessary.
Parts
Parts are available and can be ordered as necessary.

Check/test procedure
- Remove lower center engine compartment lining (AR61.20-P-1105XG).
- Check part number at top at actuator of differential lock of front axle.
No actuator with the item number A 463 906 33 01 may be installed.
Perform check using a mirror as shown in (Figure 1).

Figure 1
- Check part number at top at actuator of differential lock of rear axle using a mirror (Figure 2). No actuator with the part number A 463 906 34 01 may be installed.
If part number of actuator at rear axle cannot be read off due to undercoat / paint coat or parts sticker is no longer legible, the actuator will be replaced.

Figure 2
- Part number illegible or corresponds to A 463 906 33 01 and/or A 463 906 34 01: Perform work procedure.
- Part number does NOT correspond to A 463 906 33 01 and does NOT correspond to A 463 906 34 01: End measure.
The results of this check must be documented in writing on the work order.
Work procedure
- Replace actuator of differential lock at front axle and/or rear axle.
The parking brake on the rear axle must be opened after the vehicle has been lifted.
To do this, press the start button twice without actuating the brake pedal (ignition on) – actuate the brake pedal – move selector lever to “N” position (read on display) – open parking brake – switch off ignition.
Attention: Now that the vehicle is in permanent “N,” there is a risk of the vehicle rolling away.
Only actuators with incorrect or illegible part number will be replaced.

Re: Recall NHTSA 20V090 – Loss of Stability Control and Anti-Lock Brakes
On February 14, 2020, MBUSA submitted a Safety Defect and Non-Compliance Information Report, in accordance with 49 C.F.R Part 573.6, affecting (6,517) 2019-2020 Mercedes-Benz
GClass vehicles (463 platform), accepted under NHTSA Recall No. 20V090. (217) vehicles from the affected vehicle subject to the recall was identified to be within MBUSA’s possession and will be repaired prior to entering the stream of commerce. Changes will be made on total number of units potentially involved and descriptive information to reflect vehicle population adjusted from 6,517 to 6,300 vehicles.
As such, MBUSA will not mail an owner notification letter for (217) vehicles from the affected vehicle subject to the recall.
Chronology :
In July 2018, MBAG launched an initial investigation based on isolated cases of field reports from various markets where customers reported receiving an in-vehicle message about a malfunction with the locking mechanism of the rear differential.
MBAG requested that parts from affected vehicles be returned for further analysis. MBAG’s analysis continued through the end of 2018 and into 2019 and involved an analysis of the performance of a variety of different components of the differential locking systems. In April 2019, MBAG’s analysis began to focus in on the operation of a specific resistor within the differential system.
The analysis eventually found that sulfur from the axle oil was impacting the performance of an electrical contact in the resistor and MBAG began to analyze the effects of an affected resistor. It was found that if a resistor were impacted, communication between the differential control unit and the differential locking actuator would be interrupted. The differential control unit would interpret the differential as being in a “locked” condition and ABS and ESP functions would be deactivated.
The deactivation of these systems is consistent with the strategy for a locked differential and is a protective measure. It was also found that if the condition occurred at low speeds, as was consistent with most reports from the field at the time, the vehicle could be stopped safely and braking performance was not affected. Subsequently, in December 2019, MBAG analyzed the effects of the condition at higher rates of speed. While field data indicates less than 2% of the reports occurred at higher operating conditions, on February 7, 2020, decided to conduct a recall to address the condition.

The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “PENDING” on February 21, 2020. Background Issue Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2019-2020 G-Class vehicles (463 platform), the control unit of the differential locking module might not meet current production specifications. The electrical contact of a specific resistor might be impaired due to sulfur fumes originating from the axle oil. If the resistor is impaired, the electrical currents calculated with this resistor would have a higher value than what actually exists. As a result, the communication between the control unit and the locking actuator will shut down and the differential locking status might no longer be reliably determined. According to the specified system strategy for locked differentials, both ESP and ABS systems would be deactivated. This could increase the risk of a crash under certain operating conditions. The customer will be made aware of the issue by an ABS and ESP message in the instrument cluster. What We’re Doing MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will check the differential locking modules on the affected vehicles and replace them, if necessary. Parts A remedy is not yet available. Remove lower center engine compartment lining (AR61.20-P-1105XG). 2. Check part number at top at actuator of differential lock of front axle. No actuator with the item number A 463 906 33 01 may be installed. Perform check using a mirror as shown in (Figure 1). Figure 1 3 P-RC-2020070005 3. Check part number at top at actuator of differential lock of rear axle using a mirror (Figure 2). No actuator with the part number A 463 906 34 01 may be installed. If part number of actuator at rear axle cannot be read off due to undercoat / paint coat or parts sticker is no longer legible, the actuator will be replaced. Figure 2 a. Part number illegible or corresponds to A 463 906 33 01 and/or A 463 906 34 01: Perform work procedure. b. Part number does NOT correspond to A 463 906 33 01 and does NOT correspond to A 463 906 34 01: End measure. The results of this check must be documented in writing on the work order. 4 P-RC-2020070005 Work procedure 1. Replace actuator of differential lock at front axle and/or rear axle. For basic data for actuator of front axle, see AR33.40-P-0001XGA. For basic data for actuator of rear axle, see AR35.40-P-0001XGA. New actuator must not be painted.(Figure 3) Observe installation instructions for rear axle actuator. Figure 3 5 P-RC-2020070005 Important: The new rear axle actuator from the replacement parts department is delivered in “lock engaged” condition. (Visible by the position of the bolt on the actuator)(figure 6) To install the new actuator, the lock in the rear axle must be engaged manually. With the actuator removed, the slider in the axle tube for actuating the lock must be moved in the direction of the axle centerpiece (figure 5), e.g. with a Torx wrench. One of the rear wheels must be turned at the same time. The bolt of the actuator is always installed in the large opening.(figure 4 and 5) Figure 4 (lock NOT engaged: slider to wheel) Figure 1 (lock engaged: slider to axle centerpiece) 6 P-RC-2020070005 Figure 6 (installation position of rear axle actuator with new part) The differential lock opens automatically during the first ignition sequence. 2. Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : Tollo Linear AB Address : Estrids väg 10 Kristianstad FOREIGN STATES 29109 Country : Sweden Chronology : In July 2018, MBAG launched an initial investigation based on isolated cases of field reports from various markets where customers reported receiving an in-vehicle message about a malfunction with the locking mechanism of the rear differential. The differential control unit would interpret the differential as being in a “locked” condition and Part 573 Safety Recall Report 20V-090 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 ABS and ESP functions would be deactivated.
