Summary

Mercedes-BenzeBay USA, LLC. (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2013-2017 vehicles due to a software fault that may cause the date and time for the emergency call system (eCall) to differ from the actual date and time, potentially relaying an inaccurate vehicle location. Remedy

MBUSA has initiated an Over the Air (OTA) remote update. MBUSA will also notify owners, and dealers will check software for a successful OTA or update the communication module software as needed, free of charge. The recall began December 23, 2019. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA’s number for this recall is 2019120008.

Recall Campaign Launch Notification

This is to notify you of a Recall Campaign Launch regarding the emergency call system in 24,473 Model Year (“MY”) 13-17 vehicles (see supplementary page). The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers.

Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on December 21, 2019.

Background
IssueMercedes-BenzeBay AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-BenzeBay vehicles, has determined that on various Model Year (“MY”) 13-17 vehicles (see supplementary page), the software of the communication module might not meet current production specifications. This communication module is used to communicate the vehicle’s location for the emergency call system (eCall), in addition to other convenience features. Due to a software fault in the communication module as provided by the supplier, the date and time as determined from the GPS satellite data could differ from the actual date and time starting on November 4, 2019. The correct date and time are necessary for the “Assisted-GPS” function to determine the vehicle position. If there are any date and time differences, the control unit’s ability to identify the GPS satellites that are necessary for the position determination would be affected. As a result, a determination of the vehicle’s position would be delayed or not possible. Note that some vehicles may have already successfully received an “Over-the-Air” (“OTA”) update.
What We’re DoingMBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-BenzeBay dealer will check to verify whether the vehicle has received the updated software of the communication module on the affected vehicles and update if necessary.

Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY13-17 vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in Star TekInfo. Once the repair is complete, the vehicle may be sold or leased.

Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s)

Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

Mercedes-BenzeBay AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-BenzeBay vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 13-17 vehicles referenced above, the software of the communication module might not meet current production specifications. This communication module is used to communicate the vehicle’s location for the emergency call system (eCall), in addition to other convenience features. Due to a software fault in the communication module as provided by the supplier, the date and time as determined from the GPS satellite data could differ from the actual date and time starting on November 4, 2019. Prior to performing this Recall Campaign:

  • Please check VMI to determine if the vehicle is involved in the Campaign and if it has been previously repaired.
  • Please review the entire Recall Campaign bulletin and follow the repair procedure exactly as described.

Please note that Recall Campaigns do not expire and may also be performed on a vehicle with a vehicle status indicator.

Note:

  • Use Xentry 12/18 with all associated patches or higher.
  • Follow the steps exactly as described in Xentry.
  • Connect battery charger (battery voltage >12.5V).
  • Ensure all electrical consumers are switched-off.
  • In the event of software/SCN update issues, contact Star Diagnosis User Help Desk. Please refer to the “pre- call” check list before contacting UHD
  • Refer to Star Diagnosis System (SDS) Best Practices Guide.
  • If XENTRY is already connected to the vehicle, start with operation step 2.

 

If two or more software updates or SCN codings are performed during a workshop visit, the operation items 02- 4762 and 02-5058 can only be invoiced once for each workshop order!

 

  1. Connect XENTRY/DAS.

  

  1. Update Electronic Stability Program (ESP) control unit software.

To do so, select menu item Short Test View ⇒ N123/4 -mbrace ⇒ Adaptations ⇒ Control Unit Update ⇒ Control Unit Software Update”.

 

Then follow the user guidance in XENTRY Diagnosis.

Dear Mercedes-BenzeBay Owner:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Mercedes-BenzeBay AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-BenzeBay vehicles, has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Model Year (“MY”) 2013-2017 B-Class, C-Class, CLA-Class, CLS-Class, E-Class, G-Class, GL-Class, GLA-Class, GLC-Class, GLE-Class, GLK-Class, GLS-Class, GT-Class, M-Class, S-Class, SL-Class, and SLK-Class vehicles. Our records indicate that your vehicle is included in the affected population of vehicles.

What is the CONCERN? MBAG has determined that on certain MY 13-17 vehicles referenced above, the communication module software might not meet current production specifications. In addition to providing other convenience features, this communication module is used to communicate the vehicle’s location for the emergency call system (eCall). As a result, the determination of the vehicle’s position would be delayed or would not be possible at all. Thus, in case of an eCall activation, an inaccurate vehicle position might be sent to the Mercedes-BenzeBay emergency call center and delay emergency responders, increasing the risk of injury.
What will your DEALER DO? To remedy this issue, MBAG has initiated an Over-the-Air (“OTA”) update. An authorized Mercedes-BenzeBay dealer will check that the OTA was successful, and update the software of the communication module on the affected vehicles, if necessary. This service will be provided free of charge. We are dedicated to always delivering the best customer experience, and respect for your time is a top priority. While the minimum repair time can be up to 30 minutes, your dealer can provide you with a better estimate of the overall time for this service visit. As a matter of normal service process, an authorized Mercedes-BenzeBay dealer will also check for other repair measures which might be applicable to your vehicle and this may increase the required working time.

Mercedes-BenzeBay Reprogramming

J2534 Pass-Thru

All information in regard to Mercedes-BenzeBay J2534 compliant software is available free of charge and found under the MB Workshop Resources tab on the home page of www.startekinfo.com

J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-BenzeBay vehicles is available for purchase from Mercedes-BenzeBay USA.

In order to use the J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-BenzeBay vehicles, the purchaser must furnish their own:

  • Windows based PC or laptop*
  • J2534 compliant interface box*1*

*Must be purchased from a third party company and are not available from Mercedes-BenzeBay USA LLC.

*1* suggested listing of J2534 interface boxes is located within the J2534 Pass-Thru User’s Manual which is posted for view without cost under the MB Workshop Resources tab on the home page of www.startekinfo.com

 

Vehicle Coverage

J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-BenzeBay vehicles has coverage for all required functions associated to reprogramming, initialization, and fault clearing of emission control modules (engine and transmission) fitted to vehicles 2004 Model Year and newer. Additionally all access and functionality required in regard the configuration via SCN Coding and/or CVN Coding is covered.

J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-BenzeBay vehicles is delivered via DVD media which is delivered monthly for the license term of one year upon purchase.

  • All control unit software (reprogramming calibrations) is contained within J2534 DVD media.

 

Terms and conditions

J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-BenzeBay vehicles is purchased in 1-year license increments. During that license term the user will receive an initial software package, license key, SCN/CVN Coding information/access as well as monthly updates via DVD media.

  • Additional updates of software after the 1st year can be purchased at additional cost, however are not required for the system to continue functioning.
