Backup Battery Opening Exposed

Summary
Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2016-2019 Mercedes-Benz
Metris vehicles. The integrated backup battery compartment located underneath the front passenger’s seat may not have its own cover, potentially exposing the battery when the seat is moved forward.
Remedy
DVUSA will notify owners, and Mercedes-Benz dealers will install covers over the battery compartment area, free of charge. DVUSA issued owners an interim notification on December 2, 2019. The recall began March 9, 2020. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267. DVUSA’s number for this recall is VS2SITZAB.

MBAG determined that certain Mercedes-Benz Metris vehicles (platform 447 (VS20)) with an integrated backup battery located beneath the front passengerโs seat box were produced without a seat base cover. Without a seat base cover, the opening in which the integrated backup battery is located can become exposed when moving the seat forward. An object containing conductive material, such as metal, could be unintentionally dropped into the opening and make contact with the poles on the battery. Were this to occur, it could result in a short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire.
We want to assure you that Mercedes-Benz USA is taking all necessary measures to remedy this situation for you. We are also working closely with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (โNHTSAโ) and airbag suppliers to provide a remedy as soon as possible, and to prioritize repairs according to risk factors identified through testing. Unfortunately, replacement parts are not yet available for your vehicle, and we will contact you again once parts become available.
As soon as a suitable replacement part is available for your vehicle, we will send another letter notifying you to bring your vehicle to your local Authorized Mercedes-Benz Sprinter dealer to repair your vehicle free of charge.

Seat Base Cover 573 Chronology Amendment (too many characters for the recall portal comment box)
Chronology:
In November 2016, a plant audit found a Metris vehicle produced without a seat base cover for the integrated backup battery at the front passenger seat. The opening is provided to allow access to the backup battery for the start/stop system if necessary. An investigation determined that the oversight was due to a documentation error. Proper installation of the seat base cover was introduced into production at the respective plants in May and October, 2017.
At that time, the oversight was not considered to pose a safety risk. With regard to the cargo vans with bulkhead, the opening is behind the front seat and not in a location in which an object would reach the opening. This bulkhead behind the front seat prevents objects from reaching the passenger compartment from the cargo area. With regard to the passenger vans and cargo vans without bulkhead, the opening is also behind the seat and in an unlikely location for an object to drop and to make contact with the battery poles. Nor would passengers perceive the opening under the seat as a storage compartment.
Subsequently, DAG learned of an incident that occurred in February, 2018 in China. DAGโs personnel in China inspected the vehicle and found that a flexible water hose with stainless steel ends was found between the positive battery pole and the vehicle body. Contact between the water hose and the battery led to a short circuit and caused a fire under the front passenger seat. The incident was contained within the vehicle and there were no injuries. The vehicle in this case was produced at a separate facility for the local market.
Subsequently, DAG began to consider the issue again with respect to Metris vehicles in the field without a bulkhead. A production change was introduced for the cargo vehicles without a bulkhead in September 2019 and in an abundance of caution, on October 1, 2019, DAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to initiate a recall campaign for all affected vehicle variants without bulkhead (both passenger and cargo vans). DAG is not aware of any reports of injury related to this issue.
