Summary

Mercedes-BenzeBay logo USA, LLC. (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2018 SL65 AMG, 2019 SL63 AMG and 2018-2019 SL450 and SL550 vehicles. The front passenger air bag may have been improperly sewn, allowing the seam to tear during deployment.

 

Remedy

MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger air bag, free of charge. The recall began December 13, 2019. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA’s number for this recall is 2019100016.

This is to notify you of a Recall Campaign Launch regarding the passenger airbag seam on 457 Model Year (โ€œMYโ€) 2018-2019 SL-Class (231 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as โ€œOPENโ€ on December 6, 2019.
Background
Issue Daimler AG (โ€œDAGโ€), the manufacturer of Mercedes-BenzeBay logo vehicles, has determined that on certain MY 2018-2019 SL-Class vehicles (231 platform), the front passenger airbag material may not have been sewn according to production specifications. In the event of a crash necessitating an airbag deployment, the circumferential seam in the passenger airbag material might tear, possibly affecting the performance of the airbag, which might increase the risk of injury for the front passenger.
What Weโ€™re Doing MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-BenzeBay logo dealer will replace the passenger airbag module on the affected vehicles.

Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY18-19 SL-Class vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.  Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as โ€œOPENโ€ and Work Instructions will be available in Star TekInfo.  Once the repair is complete, the vehicle may be sold or leased.

Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s)

Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new MY18-19 SL-Class vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

Daimler AG (โ€œDAGโ€), the manufacturer of Mercedes-BenzeBay logo vehicles, has determined that on certain MY 2018-2019 SL-Class vehicles (231 platform), the front passenger airbag material may not have been sewn according to production specifications. In the event of a crash necessitating an airbag deployment, the circumferential seam in the passenger airbag material might tear, possibly affecting the performance of the airbag, which might increase the risk of injury for the front passenger. An authorized Mercedes- Benz dealer will replace the passenger airbag module on the affected vehicles.

Prior to performing this Recall Campaign:

  • Please check VMI to determine if the vehicle is involved in the Campaign and if it has been previously repaired. Always Check VMI for any open campaigns, and perform accordingly.
  • Please review the entire Recall Campaign bulletin and follow the repair procedure exactly as described.

Please note that Recall Campaigns do not expire and may also be performed on a vehicle with a vehicle status indicator.

Before beginning work, there must be no SRS fault message present in the instrument cluster.

If an SRS fault message is present before beginning work, it must be rectified.        Do not invoice the fault rectification together with the recall.

 

Work procedure

 

  1. Replace front passenger airbag.

For basic data, see AR91.60-P-0680RK.

 

  1. Turn the transmitter key in the electronic ignition lock to position 1 and check whether the airbag indicator lamp (A, figure 1 or 2) goes off and stays off after several seconds.

The SRS check is complete after this step.

Contrary to the work instructions in WIS, it is not required to delete the fault memory in the SRS system using XENTRY Diagnosis.

What is the Concern?

DAG has determined that on certain MY 2018-2019 SL-Class vehicles (231 platform), the front passenger airbag material may not have been sewn according to production specifications. In the event of a crash necessitating an airbag deployment, the circumferential seam in the passenger airbag material might tear, possibly affecting the performance of the airbag, which might increase the risk of injury for the front passenger.

To remedy this recall issue, an authorized Mercedes-BenzeBay logo dealer will replace the passenger airbag on the affected vehicles. Unfortunately, the parts to remedy this are not yet available.

We are working to obtain the necessary parts to correct this condition as quickly as possible. As parts become available, we will send you another letter asking you to take your vehicle to an authorized Mercedes-BenzeBay logo dealer to have the recall completed free of charge.

Chronology of Defect/Noncompliance Determination

At the end of September 2018, DAG was informed by its airbag supplier that the airbag material seam separated in a single case during the deployment of a front passenger airbag in conformity of production (โ€œCOPโ€) testing of the instrument cluster with the airbag, carried out by the instrument cluster supplier.   In November 2018, DAG was informed by the instrument cluster supplier of a second, similar occurrence during COP testing.  Analysis of the front passenger airbag after deployment showed a small tear at the circumferential seam of the airbag material and an investigation was initiated. The investigation initially indicated a production error as a potential root cause for the tearing of the airbag material at the seam.

In December 2018, working together with the supplier, DAG initiated further analyses.  These analyses included numerical simulations and physical testing on potentially affected airbags in order to determine whether the small seam tears that were previously observed might adversely affect impact occupant protection in a crash.

The supplier completed its testing and reported back to Daimler in March 2019. The supplier concluded that, while the front passenger airbag material might slightly tear at the circumferential seam during an airbag deployment, the supplierโ€™s analysis did not indicate that the airbag’s restraint function would be impaired, and therefore the occupant protection would not be adversely impacted.

DAG initiated internal analyses in the spring of 2019 to further verify the supplierโ€™s conclusion.

DAG found that although all data available showed only a slight tear of the airbag cushion along the seam, the characteristics and size of the tear in an actual crash might vary, and the potential for impaired airbag function could not be ruled out. DAG identified the range of potentially affected vehicles via production records, and on July 26, 2019, DAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and a recall was initiated.
