Summary

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2019 A220 and A220 4MATIC vehicles. Due to improper welding, the pedal plate may bend, impairing the operation of the brake pedal.

 

Remedy

MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the welding of the brake pedal, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began May 31, 2019. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA’s number for this recall is 2019050002.

This is to notify you of a new Recall Campaign regarding the brake pedal plate welding on 1051 Model Year (“MY”) 2019 A-Class (177 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on May 24, 2019.
Background
Issue		Daimler AG, the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2019 A-Class vehicles (177 platform), the welding of the brake pedal plate to the brake pedal lever might not have been performed according to current production specifications. In this case, applying pressure on the left side of the pedal plate might lead to a tilting of the pedal plate (yaw). If such tilting occurs, the operation of the brake pedal would be impaired, increasing the risk of a crash.
What We’re Doing		MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will check the welding of the brake pedal on the affected vehicles and replace the brake pedal, if necessary.

Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY19 A-Class vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.  Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in Star TekInfo Once the repair is complete, the vehicle may be sold or leased. Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired.   As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s)  Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new MY19 A-Class vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

SUBJECT:	Model A-Class vehicles (177 platform) Model Year 2019 Check brake pedal, replace if necessary

 

Daimler AG, the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2019 A-Class vehicles (177 platform), the welding of the brake pedal plate to the brake pedal lever might not have been performed according to current production specifications. In this case, applying pressure on the left side of the pedal plate might lead to a tilting of the pedal plate (yaw). If such tilting occurs, the operation of the brake pedal would be impaired, increasing the risk of a crash. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will check the welding of the brake pedal on the affected vehicles and replace the brake pedal, if necessary.

Prior to performing this Recall Campaign:

• Please check VMI to determine if the vehicle is involved in the Campaign and if it has been previously repaired.
• Please review the entire Recall Campaign bulletin and follow the repair procedure exactly as described.

Please note that Recall Campaigns do not expire and may also be performed on a vehicle with a vehicle status indicator.

Approximately 1051 vehicles are involved.

Procedure

• Code 950 corresponds to AMG SPORT PACKAGE.
• It is possible that the weld seams (A) connecting the pedal plate (B) to the pedal lever (C) of the brake pedal may have been manufactured incorrectly during production of the brake pedal (Figure 1).
• The pedal plate may bend from the pedal lever when the brake pedal is depressed.

 

Check/test procedure

1. The vacuum in the brake booster must be To do this, the brake pedal must be fully depressed five times.
2. Feed a tape measure through the bezels of the steering wheel (Figure 2). 
3. Hook the tape measure into the pedal plate of the brake pedal (Figure 3).

• Depress the brake pedal on the outer left side of the pedal plate by at least 7 cm (Figure 5). 
• Depress the brake pedal on the outer right side of the pedal plate by at least 7 cm (Figure 6). 
• The pedal travel (at least 7 cm) can be determined by reading off the tape measure at the steering wheel (Figure 7). 

 

• Check whether the position of the pedal plate in relation to the pedal lever of the brake pedal has changed. The pedal plate must not become bent from the pedal lever of the brake pedal! Figure 8 shows a not OK example of a removed brake pedal.

The findings from the check/test procedure must be recorded in written form on the work order.
