Replace Electronic Power Steering Rack – Phase 1
This is to notify you of a Recall Campaign launch to replace the electronic power steering rack on 1,284 Model Year (“MY”) 2018-19 E-Class (213 platform), E-Class Coupe (238 platform), and CLS-Class (257 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on August 20, 2019.
Issue
Daimler AG (“DAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2018-2019 E-Class (213 platform), E-Class Coupe (238 platform), and CLSClass (238 platform) vehicles with rear-wheel drive, a locknut in the steering rack might have internal material cracks. In certain driving situations involving low-speed maneuvers, large lateral forces could cause the locknut to break. As a result, the steering could fail which would increase the risk of a crash
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. As a precautionary measure, an authorized MercedesBenz dealer will replace the steering rack on the affected vehicles
Parts
Parts are available and can be ordered as necessary.
Customer Notification Timeline
Customer letters will be mailed approximately one week after the remedy becomes available.

P573 MY15-17, MY18-19 Steering Gear Lock Nut, Loaded into Portal November 27, 2018 Chronology-Only Section
Chronology of Defect/Noncompliance Determination
In February 2018, the supplier of the steering rack informed DAG about instances of broken locknuts in the supplier’s production process.
Subsequently, DAG launched investigations of this issue together with the supplier. It was determined that the material of a certain batch of locknuts might have internal cracks due to a process deviation at a sub-supplier (Tier-4). As a result, it was concluded that locknuts exhibiting this issue would be identified in the production process of the supplier by the installed quality inspections and application of defined loads and forces to the steering racks in the production process. These conclusions were confirmed by additional high-stress load testing of potentially affected locknuts.
After this investigation was completed, DAG determined in March 2018 that no safety relevance for this issue existed, as all potentially affected locknuts or steering racks would be identified in the supplier’s production process.
In June 2018, DAG was informed about an instance of a fixed steering assembly during unloading of a new vehicle at a dealer in Asia. The steering rack of this vehicle was shipped to the supplier for investigation and in mid-July 2018 a broken locknut was identified as the root cause.
Subsequently, the investigation of the aforementioned issue was re-opened in order to clarify why the locknut was not identified as faulty during the production process of the supplier.
In the course of this investigation in August and September 2018, it was concluded that the locknut in question had internal cracks in the material, thus making it impossible for those cracks to be detected by the installed quality inspections at the supplier. Until then, it was assumed that all cracks would be visible on the surface and thus be detectable by the installed magnetic particle testing (fluxing).
Furthermore, it was concluded that the existing conformity-of-production tests that apply defined forces to each steering rack might not in every case lead to a detection of an affected locknut in the supplier’s production process.
Further investigations in October 2018 were carried out to analyze the forces potentially occurring during vehicle operation as well as the speeds and driving situations under which such forces might occur. It was concluded that a breakage of an affected locknut would only occur under maximum forces acting on the steering rack. Such forces typically appear in case of contact with the curb during parking or maneuvering of the vehicle. These driving situations usually occur at low speeds.
At the same time, the range of potentially affected vehicles was determined by analyzing logistics documents of the complete supply chain.
In November 2018, DAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out.

- CEL Doctor: The ANCEL AD310 is one of the best-selling OBD II scanners on the market and is recommended by Scotty Kilmer, a YouTuber and auto mechanic. It can easily determine the cause of the check engine light coming on, quickly read and clear diagnostic trouble codes, read live data & hard memory data, view freeze frame, I/M monitor readiness and collect vehicle information. Instead of taking car to mechanic shop, you can use it to check the trouble code and show code definition by yourself.
- Sturdy and Compact: Equipped with a 2.5 foot cable made of very thick, flexible insulation. It is important to have a sturdy scanner as it can easily fall to the ground when working in a car. The AD310 OBD2 scanner is a well-constructed device with a sleek design. It weighs 12 ounces and measures 8.9 x 6.9 x 1.4 inches. Thanks to its compact design and light weight, transporting the device is not a problem. The buttons are clearly labelled and the screen is large and displays results clearly.
- Accurate Fast and Easy to Use: The AD310 scanner can help you or your mechanic understand if your car is in good condition, provides exceptionally accurate and fast results, reads and clears engine trouble codes in seconds. No need for batteries or a charger, get power directly from the OBDII Data Link Connector in your vehicle.
- OBDII Protocols and Car Compatibility: Many cheap scan tools do not really support all OBD2 protocols. This is not the case with the AD310 scanner as it can support all OBDII protocols such as KWP2000, J1850 VPW, ISO9141, J1850 PWM and CAN. This device also has extensive vehicle compatibility with 1996 US-based, 2000 EU-based and Asian cars, light trucks, SUVs, as well as newer OBD2 and CAN vehicles both domestic and foreign. Check compatibility with your vehicle model before purchasing.
- Home Necessity and Worthy to Own: This is an excellent code reader to travel or home with as it weighs less and it is compact in design. You can easily slide it in your backpack as you head to the garage, or put it on the dashboard, this will be a great fit for you. The AD310 is not only portable, but also accurate and fast in performance. Moreover, it covers various car brands and is suitable for people who just need a code reader to check their car.

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL 2019080011 This notice applies to your vehicle, VIN: Replace Steering Rack NHTSA Recall # 18V850 December, 2019 Dear Mercedes-Benz Owner: This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Daimler AG (“DAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Model Year (“MY”) 2015-2019 C-Class (205 platform), E-Class (213 platform), E-Class Coupe (C238 platform), E-Class Cabriolet (A238), and CLS-Class (257 platform) vehicles. Our records indicate that your vehicle is included in the affected population of vehicles. What is the CONCERN? DAG determined that on certain MY 2018-2019 C-Class (205 platform), E-Class (213 platform), E-Class Coupe (C238 platform), E-Class Cabriolet (A238 platform), and CLS-Class (257 platform) vehicles with rear-wheel drive a locknut in the steering rack might have internal material cracks. Additionally, six MY 2015-2017 C-Class (205 platform) vehicles were identified as having been previously repaired using a potentially affected locknut. In certain driving situations involving low-speed maneuvers, large lateral forces could cause the locknut to break. As a result, the steering could fail which would increase the risk of a crash. What will your DEALER DO? An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will replace the steering rack on the affected vehicle with a genuine Mercedes-Benz new or remanufactured steering rack. The remanufactured steering racks may include subcomponents recovered and tested from previously reworked vehicles. The remanufactured steering racks are built in the same facility and are subject to the same end-of-line and endurance criteria as those assembled with originally manufactured parts. They are subject to the same two-year new part warranty as well as your vehicle’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty of 4 years/50,000 miles. This service will be provided free of charge. We are dedicated to always delivering the best customer experience, and respect for your time is a top priority. While the minimum repair time can be up to 4 hours, your dealer can provide you with a better estimate of the overall time for this service visit. As a matter of normal service process, an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will also check for other repair measures which might be applicable to your vehicle and this may increase the required working time. What should YOU DO? For additional information and to schedule an appointment, please contact your preferred authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer at your earliest convenience. To locate authorized dealers see www.mbusa.com/recall. Please mention you are scheduling an appointment to replace the steering rack under Recall Campaign #2019080011. You may be asked for your 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) which for your convenience is located above your name at the top of this letter. Information for Owners In the event that you are no longer the vehicle owner, or have had a change of address, please complete the reverse side and return the updated information in the enclosed envelope. If this is a leased vehicle and the lessor and registered owner receive this notice, please forward this information by first class mail to the lessee within 10 business days to comply with Federal Regulations. A VIN-based recall lookup tool on our MBUSA.com website now offers a search feature that will indicate whether a vehicle has been subject to a safety recall, and whether that vehicle has had the free remedy performed. See www.mbusa.com/recall. Should you have any questions or encounter any difficulty regarding this Recall Campaign, please contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer. If for any reason a dealer is unable to remedy your situation, we are always happy to hear from you. Please contact us at 1-(800) FOR-MERCEDES (1-800-367-6372). Part 573 Safety Recall Report 18V-850 Page 7 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : In the unlikely event that such a locknut was installed in the affected vehicle population, large lateral forces, such as those encountered by impacting a curb during maneuvering or parking, could cause the locknut to break. This could cause the steering to become fixed in a static position, which would increase the risk of a crash. Description of the Cause : Due to a production deviation at a sub-supplier (Tier-4), a certain batch of locknuts might have internal material cracks and thereby not meet the strength requirements specified. Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : thyssenkrupp Presta Aktiengesellschaft Address : Essanestrasse 10 Eschen FOREIGN STATES 9492 Country : Liechtenstein Chronology : In February 2018, the supplier of the steering rack informed DAG about instances of broken locknuts in the supplier’s production process. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 18V-850 Page 8 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 In the course of this investigation in August and September 2018, it was concluded that the locknut in question had internal cracks in the material, thus making it impossible for those cracks to be detected by the installed quality inspections at the supplier. Until then, it was assumed that all cracks would be visible on the surface and thus be detectable by the installed magnetic particle testing (fluxing). Furthermore, it was concluded that the existing conformity-of-production tests that apply defined forces to each steering rack might not in ev Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : As a precautionary measure an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will replace the steering rack on the affected vehicles. Additionally, six MY 2015-2017 C-Class (205 platform) vehicles were identified as having been previously repaired using the affected locknut. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : The customer will not receive an advance warning due to the nature of the failure mechanism. Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : thyssenkrupp Presta Aktiengesellschaft Address : Essanestrasse 10 Eschen FOREIGN STATES 9492 Country : Liechtenstein Chronology : In February 2018, the supplier of the steering rack informed DAG about instances of broken locknuts in the supplier’s production process. Additionally, six MY 2015-2017 C-Class (205 platform) vehicles were identified as having been previously repaired using the affected locknut. Pursuant to 49 C.F.R. § 577.11(e), MBUSA does not plan to provide notice about pre-notice reimbursement to owners since all involved vehicles remain covered under the new vehicle warranty. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The steering racks to be installed in the scope of the recall contain locknuts which meet production specifications. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : A change in the production procedure of our supplier ensures that this issue can no longer occur from October 16, 2018 onwards. Recall Schedule : Description of Recall Schedule : Dealers will be notified of the pending voluntary recall campaign in December 2018. Owners will be notified approximately one week after recall launch to the dealers in January 2018. A copy of all communications will be provided when available.
