April 27, 2018 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 18V272000
Oil in Active Curve System may Leak
The leaking oil in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V272
Manufacturer Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC.
Components SUSPENSION
Potential Number of Units Affected 9,725
Summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2012-2014 ML350 Bluetec 4Matic and ML550 4Matic, 2012-2015 ML63 AMG 4Matic and ML350 4Matic, 2013-2016 GL350 Bluetec 4Matic, GL550 4Matic and GL63 AMG 4Matic, 2017 GLS350d 4Matic, GLS450 4Matic, GLS550 4Matic and GLS63 AMG 4Matic, 2015 ML400 4Matic, 2016 GLE400 4Matic, GLE350 4Matic, GLE63 AMG 4Matic, GLE63S AMG 4Matic, GLE450 4Matic Coupe and GLE63S AMG 4Matic Coupe, 2015-2016 GL450 4Matic and 2013-2014 GL450 4Matic vehicles equipped with the Active Curve System (ACS). In certain driving conditions, if the oil level in the ACS reservoir is below the minimum level, the oil may foam and leak out of the vent holes in the reservoir cap.
Remedy
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will correct the oil level as necessary and replace the reservoir sealing cap to prevent oil foam from leaking out, free of charge. The recall began August 30, 2018. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA’s number for this recall is 2018070015.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
Check if your Mercedes-Benz has a Recall
This is to notify you of a new Recall Campaign to replace the oil dipstick on 9,725 MY12-17 166 & 292 platform (ML-Class, GLE-Class, GLECoupe Class, GL-Class and GLS-Class) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on August 17, 2018.
Issue
Daimler AG (“DAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain ML, GLE, GLE Coupe, GL, and GLS-Class vehicles (166, 292 platform) with the Active Curve System (“ACS”), the oil in the ACS’s oil reservoir could leak out of the oil reservoir through the vent holes in the sealing cap of the oil dipstick. In such case, the oil could leak onto hot engine components which could increase, the risk of a fire.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealership will replace the oil dipstick of the active curve system oil reservoir on the affected vehicles.
Parts
Parts are available and can be ordered as necessary.
Customer Notification Timeline
Customer letters will be mailed approximately one week after the remedy becomes available.
Work procedure
- Replace oil dipstick (A, Figure 1) of ACS (ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM) reservoir. A new and optimized oil dipstick with filter is installed in the plug (B, Figure 1).
Primary Parts Information
Qty. | Part Name | Part Number | Estimated Replacement Rate |
1 | ACS (ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM) oil dipstick | A 166 320 00 00 | 100% |
Chronology :
In July 2017, DAG received one individual field report about a vehicle manufactured in 2015 with local thermal damage in the engine compartment and immediately launched investigations.
In September 2017 first results of the analysis indicated a leakage of oil from the oil reservoir of the Active Curve System through the vent holes in the sealing cap of the oil reservoir. Further analyses were started.
In November 2017, DAG was able to cause oil in the oil pump to foam up under extremely dynamic driving conditions.
Additional analyses were initiated to identify further contributing factors.
In January 2018 it was found that due to a deviation in the production process, the oil level in the ACS might not meet internal specification potentially increasing the likelihood of oil foaming.
To assess all possible consequences of the issue, fire tests were conducted in February 2018.
In March 2018, the range of potentially affected vehicles was identified.
In April 2018, after completing all aforementioned testing for potential fire, DAG determined that a potential safety risk could not be ruled out.

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL This INTERIM notice applies to your vehicle, VIN: WDDUG6DB8FA123456 Oil Reservoir Leak – Active Curve System NHTSA Recall #18V272 June, 2018 WDDUG6DB8FA123456 Chris Currey 13470 International Parkway Jacksonville, FL 32218 Dear Mercedes-Benz Owner, This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Daimler AG (“DAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Model Year (“MY”) 2012-2017 GL-Class, ML-Class, GLE-Class, GLS-Class and GLE Coupe-Class vehicles. Our records indicate that your vehicle is included in the affected population of vehicles. What is the Concern? Daimler AG, (“DAG”) the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain MY 2012-2017 ML, GL, GLE, GLS and GLE Coupe vehicles (166, 292 platform) with the Active Curve System (“ACS”), the oil in the ACS’s oil reservoir could start foaming under certain driving situations. The oil foam could then leak out of the oil reservoir through the vent holes in the sealing cap and spray onto hot surface components of the exhaust system, increasing the risk of a fire and subsequently the risk of injury to passengers and others. To remedy this issue, an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will correct the ACS oil level if necessary, and replace the sealing cap of the ACS oil reservoir with an optimized sealing cap to prevent oil foam leakage. Unfortunately, the parts to remedy this are currently not yet available. We are working to obtain the necessary parts to correct this condition as quickly as possible. As parts become available, we will send you another letter asking you to take your vehicle to an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer to have the recall completed free of charge. Should you have any concerns or questions regarding your vehicle before you receive the next recall letter when parts are available, please contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer. If for any reason a dealer is unable to remedy your situation, we are always happy to hear from you. Please contact us at 1-800-367-6372. A new vehicle identification number (VIN)-based recall lookup tool, on our MBUSA.com website, now offers a search function that will indicate whether a vehicle has been subject to a safety recall, and whether that vehicle has had the free remedy performed. Please visit www.MBUSA.com/recall. If you are no longer the vehicle owner, or have a change of address, please complete the reverse side of this letter and return the complete letter in the enclosed envelope. If this is a leased vehicle and the lessor and registered owner receive this notice, please forward this information by first class mail to the lessee within 10 days to comply with federal regulations. If a Mercedes-Benz dealer for any reason is unable to remedy the situation without charge, or within a reasonable amount of time, pursuant to law 49 U.S.C. Dear Mercedes-Benz Owner: This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Daimler AG (“DAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Model Year 2012-2017 GLE-Class, GLE-Coupe Class, GLS-Class vehicles. Our records indicate that your vehicle is included in the affected population of vehicles. What is the CONCERN? DAG determined that on certain ML, GLE, GLE Coupe, GL, and GLS-Class vehicles (166, 292 platform) with the Active Curve System (“ACS”), if the oil level is below minimum, the oil in the ACS’s oil reservoir could leak out of the oil reservoir through the vent holes in the sealing cap of the oil dipstick. In such case, the oil could leak onto hot engine components which could increase the risk of a fire. What will your DEALER DO? An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will replace the oil dipstick on the affected vehicles. This service will be provided free of charge. We are dedicated to always delivering the best customer experience, and respect for your time is a top priority. While the minimum repair time can be less than 30 minutes, your dealer can provide you with a better estimate of the overall time for this service visit. As a matter of normal service process, an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will also check for other repair measures which might be applicable to your vehicle and this may increase the required working time. What should YOU DO? For additional information and to schedule an appointment, please contact your preferred authorized Mercedes- Benz dealer at your earliest convenience. To locate authorized dealers see www.mbusa.com/recall. Please mention you are scheduling an appointment to replace the oil dipstick under Recall Campaign # 2018070015. The oil foam might leak out of the oil reservoir through the vent holes in the sealing cap. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : Depending on the orientation of the vent holes in the sealing cap, leaking oil could spray onto hot surface components of the exhaust system. In such a Part 573 Safety Recall Report 18V-272 Page 6 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 case the risk of a fire cannot be ruled out. Description of the Cause : Due to a deviation in the production process, the oil level in the Active Curve System might not meet internal specifications. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : NR Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : NR Address : NR NR Country : NR Chronology : In July 2017, DAG received one individual field report about a vehicle manufactured in 2015 with local thermal damage in the engine compartment and immediately launched investigations. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : As a precautionary measure an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealership, will correct the oil level if necessary and replace the sealing cap of the oil reservoir with an optimized sealing cap to prevent oil foam leakage. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The new cap has an additional membrane as protection against hydraulic oil leakage. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 18V-272 Page 7 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : Installation of an optimized sealing cap preventing the leakage of oil foam in our vehicle production plants ensures that this issue can no longer occur from June 1, 2016 onwards. The level of knowledge at that time did not indicate any risk of fire, but only showed a potential for minor amounts of oil running down the side of the oil reservoir. In such a case the risk of a fire cannot be ruled out. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 18V-272 Page 6 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Description of the Cause : Due to a deviation in the production process, the oil level in the Active Curve System might not meet internal specifications. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : As a precautionary measure an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealership, will correct the oil level if necessary and replace the sealing cap of the oil reservoir with an optimized sealing cap to prevent oil foam leakage.
