Daimler Coaches North America (Daimler Coaches) is recalling certain 2022-2024 Mercedes Benz
Tourrider Business and Mercedes Benz
Tourrider Premium vehicles equipped with BraunAbility wheelchair lifts. The outer barrier may deploy unexpectedly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 403, “Platform Lift Systems.”
Remedy
Dealers will relocate the ground sensing pressure switch, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed April 19, 2024. Owners may contact Daimler Coaches customer service at 1-416-624-3558. Daimler Coaches number for this recall is TI 86.10T24282A.

January 2024: Daimler Buses Engineering in Germany carried out a load test with the wheelchair lift, in which a defect with the outer barrier (OB) deployment was noted.
February 01, 2024: Daimler Buses informed the wheelchair lift supplier, BraunAbility.
February 01~12, 2024: Internal investigation at BraunAbility.
February 12, 2024: BraunAbility informed Daimler Buses that this defect was a safety relevant issue and an ‘Equipment Recall’ would be submitted to NHTSA.
February 12 ~ 20, 2024: Investigation by Daimler Coaches North America (DCNA) as to which vehicles were installed with Braun platform lifts as this installation occurs at the US PDI center based on specific customer orders, not at the Daimler Busses manufacturing facility.
February 15, 2024: BraunAbility formally notifies DCNA of the defect.
February 15, 2024: Braun submits Part 573 to NHTSA and recall number 24E-017 is assigned.
February 21, 2024: Daimler Buses GmbH determined a safety recall regarding this issue affecting certain Mercedes-Benz
Tourrider Business and Tourrider Premium coaches.

Description of the Safety Risk : As per Braun 24E-017: The outer barrier (OB) is used to protect the
wheelchair and occupant from rolling away unintentionally during transport out of the vehicle. An unintended rollaway without the outer barrier (OB) retention deployed, could possibly result in injury or death to a wheelchair occupant.
Description of the Cause : As per Braun 24E-017: The cause is an incorrectly located ground sensing pressure sensor, which is responsible for opening the outer overrun flap. Identification of Any Warning

Description of Remedy Program : As per Braun 24E-017: Relocation of the ground sensing pressure switch
from after the cylinder flow control valve, to before the cylinder flow valve. Repairs will be performed via Braun or DCNA trained personnel and any repairs completed by customers/dealers via the repair bulletin (TI) will be reimbursed via the DCNA warranty system. No repairs were completed by customers prior to the announcment of the recall, so reimbusement is not required. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component :
Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : Location of the ground sensing pressure switch from ‘after’ the control valve to ‘before’ the control valve.
This lift platform is not installed at production but at the DCNA PDI center based on specific customer order. Recall Schedule :
