October 6, 2023 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 23V676000

Improperly Secured Electrical Wiring Harness

A loss of drive power can increase the risk of a crash, and an overheated electrical wiring harness can increase the risk of a fire.

NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V676

Manufacturer Mercedes-BenzeBay logo USA, LLC

Components ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Number of Units Affected 5,326

Summary

Mercedes-BenzeBay logo USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2022-2023 AMG SL55 and AMG SL63 vehicles. The electrical wiring harness for the starter and alternator may not be secured properly, which can result in a short circuit and a loss of drive power or cause the harness to overheat.

Remedy

Dealers will secure the electrical wiring harness for the starter and alternator, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed December 5, 2023. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.

Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

Inspect 12V Starter/Alternator Wiring Harness

This is to notify you of the Recall Campaign Launch to inspect the 12V starter/alternator wiring harness on 5,326 Model Year (“MY”) 2022-2023 SL (232 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.NHTSA.gov website and may generate questions from customers.

Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on November 3, 2023.

Issue

Mercedes-BenzeBay logo AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-BenzeBay logo vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2022-2023 SL (232 platform) vehicles with the M177 engine, the routing of the 12V starter/alternator wiring harness might not meet specifications. The wiring harness might contact the drive shaft and chafe, which may result in a short circuit. A loss of propulsion cannot be ruled out, which could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, due to the high electrical currents potentially flowing through this wiring harness, the temperature in this area might increase. Therefore, a risk of fire cannot be ruled out.

What We’re Doing

MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-BenzeBay logo dealer will inspect and secure the 12V-starter/alternator wiring harness on the affected vehicles.

Parts

The remedy is available and can be performed.

Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in NetStar VMI and Xentry Portal. Once the repair is complete, the vehicle may be sold or leased.

Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s).

Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

Notice to California Dealers: As required by 13 CCR 2117, a proof of correction (“POC”) certificate showing that the vehicle has been repaired under this recall must be issued by the authorized service facility, and that such a certificate may be required by California as a condition of vehicle re-registration or operation. Please reference this POC in the attached work instructions. Failure to complete this step may result in fines and penalties and lead to customer dissatisfaction.

Chronology :

In November 2022, MBAG became aware of an isolated case outside the US in which a customer alleged a loss of propulsion. It was found in this isolated field case that the wiring harness of the 12V-starter/alternator was damaged due to chafing on the drive shaft. Since there were no other cases of a similar nature known nor detected, the field case was concluded to be a single occurrence during vehicle production. In late August 2023, MBAG learned of additional field cases and together with its supplier, immediately initiated investigations regarding the root cause and potential consequences that may result from a damaged wiring harness. In addition, the field data was reviewed to identify possible related field cases and customer reports.

On September 29, 2023, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.

MBAG is currently aware of 6 warranty claims and field reports of potentially related cases received on December 7, 2022, February 24, 2023, April 3, 2023, June 23, 2023, July 6, 2023 and August 15, 2023 in the US.

MBAG is not aware of any cases of death or injury related to this defect.
