Replace the Absorbers in the Roof Frame
This is to notify you of the Recall Campaign Launch to replace the absorbers in the roof frame in 10 Model Year (“MY”) 2023 EQE (295 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.NHTSA.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on August 25, 2023.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz
AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2023 EQE (295 platform) vehicles, the mounting of the absorbers in the roof frame might not meet current production specifications. In the event of a crash with window airbag deployment, the absorbers might separate into the interior of the vehicle. In this case, the risk of injury for vehicle occupants could be increased.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealer will replace the absorbers on the affected vehicles.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed.
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in NetStar VMI and Xentry Portal. Once the repair is complete the vehicle may be sold or leased.
Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s).
Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.
Customer Notification Timeline
Customer letters will be mailed on September 8, 2023.

Chronology :
In April 2023, it was discovered that vehicles equipped with absorbers with an insufficient retaining force might have been retailed.
Originally, MBAG had implemented a plant action in June 2022 to rework all potentially affected vehicles having absorbers with insufficient retaining force.
In April 2023 as part of an internal review, it was determined that some vehicles had left the plant without the aforementioned rework completed. Subsequently, the potentially affected vehicles in the field were identified.
On July 28, 2023, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.
MBAG can confirm there are no warranty claims, field or service reports, or other information (such as the number of deaths and/or injuries) related to this defect in the USA.
