FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : In the event of a crash with window airbag deployment, the absorbers might separate into the interior of the vehicle. In this case, the risk of injury for vehicle occupants would be increased. Description of the Cause : Due to a deviation in the development process, the locking lugs to secure the absorbers might not have a sufficient retaining force. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : The driver will not receive a warning due to the nature of the failure mechanism. Originally, MBAG had implemented a plant action in June 2022 to rework all potentially affected vehicles having absorbers with insufficient retaining force. In April 2023 as part of an internal review, it was determined that some vehicles had left the plant without the aforementioned rework completed. Subsequently, the potentially affected vehicles in the field were identified. On July 28, 2023, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall. MBAG can confirm there are no warranty claims, field or service reports, or other information (such as the number of deaths and/or injuries) related to this defect in the USA. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer, will replace the absorbers on the affected vehicles. Pursuant to 49 C.F.R. § 577.11(e), MBUSA does not plan to provide notice about pre-notice reimbursement to owners since none of the involved vehicles would have been previously subject to the condition described and all remain covered under the new vehicle warranty. (Avoid bending the headliner, it will leave permanent kinks) The windshield does not need to be removed. For basic data, see AR68.30-P-4300EQS. 2. Replace front absorbers on the left and right sides (A, Figure 1). The absorbers are clipped into the body-in-white under the headliner (Figure 2).
