Summary
Mercedes-Benz
USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2021 Maybach
S580 and S580 vehicles. The bulkhead that separates the engine compartment from the passenger compartment may not have been properly sealed, causing water to drain into the passenger compartment. Water intrusion into the foot wells may cause corrosion and/or short circuits to electrical components, disabling safety features, including seat belt tightening and seat adjustments (PreSafe system).
Remedy
Dealers will repair the bulkhead front wall sealing, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 12, 2023. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA’s number for this recall is 2023040009.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

Rework the Primary Bulkhead Sealing
This is to notify you of the Recall Campaign Launch to rework the primary bulkhead sealing on 6 Model Year (“MY”) 2021 S-Class (223 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.NHTSA.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on April 28, 2023.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz
AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2021 S-Class (223 platform) vehicles, the primary bulkhead sealing might not meet the specifications for water intrusion. In this case, water exposure might lead to water ingress into the vehicle’s interior and cause corrosion on electrical contacts and/or short circuits or leakage currents. As a result, the function of the PreSafe system (e.g. seatbelt tightening and seat adjustment) might be impaired which could increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash. In addition, it may not be possible to restart a parked vehicle. When the issue occurs, the customer might notice damp carpets in the front footwells or fogged windows. The driver might also be made aware through a warning message in the instrument cluster.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealership will rework the primary bulkhead sealing on the affected vehicles.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed.
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in NetStar VMI and Xentry Portal. Once the repair is complete the vehicle may be sold or leased.
Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s).
Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

Chronology :
In July 2020, MBAG’s standard quality control testing found that under certain conditions, water might ingress into the vehicle’s interior. MBAG immediately initiated analyses to determine the root cause. These analyses indicated a leak in the area of the water drain at the primary bulkhead.
In October 2020, improvements were implemented in the production to the water drain and the sealing of the primary bulkhead in order to prevent potential water leakage into the vehicle.
From October 2020 until June 2021, MBAG monitored and analyzed production vehicles to validate the effectiveness of the countermeasures. Subsequently, MBAG initiated plant actions to identify potentially affected vehicles.
In parallel, MBAG investigated the potential effects of the observed issue on electrical connections and components in the area surrounding the front wall. This complex analysis of potential consequences continued until mid 2022.
Throughout MBAG’s investigations and review, it has received no field reports of water ingress due to the seal of the front wall, worldwide. Nonetheless, MBAG conducted internal studies to determine whether the observed issue could occur in the field. These studies concluded in early 2023 that in rare scenarios involving high water exposure, water leakage through the primary bulkhead could occur in certain vehicles manufactured prior to the drain and sealing changes implemented in production.
In early 2023, MBAG reviewed production records and plant actions to identify the population of potentially affected vehicles.
On March 17, 2023, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.
MBAG can confirm there are no warranty claims, field or service reports, and other information (such as the numbers of deaths and/or injuries) related to this issue in the USA.

This is to notify you of a Recall Campaign to rework the primary bulkhead sealing on 6 Model Year (“MY”) 2021 S-Class (223 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs were flagged in VMI as “PENDING” on March 31, 2023.
Background
In this case, high water exposure might lead to water ingress into the vehicle’s interior and cause corrosion on the electrical contacts and/or short circuits or leakage currents.
An authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealership will rework the sealing of the primary bulkhead on the affected vehicles.

Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : As a precautionary measure, an authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealership will
rework the sealing of the primary bulkhead front wall on the affected vehicles.
Pursuant to 49 C.F.R. § 577.11(e), MBUSA does not plan to provide notice about pre-notice reimbursement to owners since none of the involved vehicles would have been previously subject to the condition described and all remain covered under the new vehicle warranty How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The sealing of the front wall meet the specifications for water intrusion Remedy Parts:
