Replace the Steering Coupling Locking Screw
This is to notify you of a Recall Campaign Launch to replace the steering coupling locking screws on 69 Model Year (โMYโ) 2021-2022 GLE-Class and GLS-Class (167 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as โOPENโ on January 13, 2023.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz
AG (โMBAGโ), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (โMYโ) 2021-2022 GLE and GLS (167 platform) vehicles, the steering coupling locking screws might not be tightened to the specified torque value. Insufficient tightening torque of the steering coupling locking screws might lead to free play in the connection, which would cause noises when driving on uneven roads. Should these noises not be noticed and therefore the vehicle not be brought to a workshop, the steering coupling locking screws may subsequently loosen further due to vibrations during driving and ultimately might back out of the steering coupling. In this condition, it cannot be fully ruled out that the steering coupling may detach from the steering shaft. This could impair the ability to steer the vehicle, which could increase the risk of a crash. Before the issue occurs, the driver may be made aware of the issue by resulting noises when driving on uneven roads
What Weโre Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealer will replace the steering coupling locking screws on the affected vehicles.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed.
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as โOPENโ and Work Instructions will be available in Star TekInfo. Once the repair is complete the vehicle may be sold or leased.
Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s).
Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.
Customer Notification Timeline
Customer letters will be mailed on January 27, 2023.

Chronology :
In the end of August 2022, MBAG received a single field report outside the US describing noises while steering.
The analysis of the vehicle rendered that a loose steering coupling locking screw caused the subject noises.
MBAG launched investigations in order to identify the failure mechanism and root cause for an incorrectly torqued steering coupling locking screw.
In September 2022, the investigation concluded that the issue was caused by an individual worker error in the vehicle rework process of the assembly plant. Accordingly, all vehicles reworked by the subject worker were considered to be potentially affected, and a plant rework campaign was started to identify, block and rework all vehicles still in access of MBAG.
In October 2022, potentially affected vehicles in the field were identified and potential consequences of an incorrectly torqued locking screw were analyzed.
On December 9, 2022, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.
MBAG confirms there are no warranty claims, field or service reports, and other information (such as the numbers of deaths and/or injuries) related to this defect in the USA.

CENTERS SUBJECT: Model GLE and GLS (167 platform) vehicles Model Year 2021-2022 Replace the Steering Coupling Locking Screws Mercedes-Benz
Before the issue occurs, the driver may be made aware of the issue by resulting noises when driving on uneven roads. An authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealer will replace the steering coupling locking screws on the affected vehicles. AG Address : NR Foreign States Country : Germany Chronology : Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-936 Page 4 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR ยง573 In the end of August 2022, MBAG received a single field report outside the US describing noises while steering. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : An authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealer will replace the steering coupling locking screw on the affected vehicles. Pursuant to 49 C.F.R. ยง 577.11(e), MBUSA does not plan to provide notice about pre-notice reimbursement to owners since none of the involved vehicles would have been previously subject to the condition described and all remain covered under the new vehicle warranty. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The steering coupling locking screw tightened to the specified torque value. Remedy Part: A0109905604 – FILLISTER HEAD SCREW – STEERING COUPLING TO STEERING GEAR; M10X30 Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : A change in the rework process ensures that this issue can no longer occur from August 4, 2022 onwards. Recall Schedule : Description of Recall Schedule : Dealers will be notified of the pending voluntary recall campaign on December 23, 2022. Owners will be notified of the voluntary recall campaign on January 27, 2023 . A copy of all communications will be provided when available.
