Summary

Install 12 Volt Battery Support
This is to notify you of a Recall Campaign Launch to install additional battery support on 19,698 Model Year (“MY”) 2019-2022 CLS-Class and EClass (257 and 213 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on December 21, 2022.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that on certain MY19-22 CLS-Class and E-Class (257 and 213 platform) vehicles, the 12V battery in the trunk may dislodge in the event of a crash and subsequently detach from its electrical connections. This, in-turn, may lead to impairment of post-crash functions such as eCall, electric seat adjustment, hazard warning lights, and automatic door unlocking, which could increase the risk of injury for the vehicle occupants
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will install additional mounting support for the 12V battery on the affected vehicles.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed.
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY19-22 CLS-Class and E-Class vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in Star TekInfo. Once the repair is complete the vehicle may be sold or leased.
Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s).
Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new MY19-22 CLS-Class and E-Class vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

Chronology :
In early 2021, MBAG detected an irregularity in a single internal standard crash test in which a 12V battery moved as a result of the crash. This was the first and only occurrence showing this irregularity in a vehicle crash test. Prior crash tests had not observed such battery movement.
MBAG initiated an investigation in which it analyzed the crash test and its documentation in detail. In the course of the investigation and related testing, MBAG was unable to reproduce the battery movement observed in the earlier crash test. There also were no reports of such an occurrence in the field.
MBAG continued to conduct research and testing, and monitor field reports and claims to determine whether the crash test result had been an isolated anomaly or whether there was a risk of battery movement occurring in a real world crash.
In parallel and as a precautionary measure, MBAG developed an improved battery mount as extra protection against any possible battery movement during a crash. This measure was implemented in August 2022 to vehicle production.
In the summer of 2022, MBAG analyzed whether post-crash failure of eCall and hazard warning lights might constitute a safety risk in relation to the specific boundary conditions of the subject failure mechanism. Also during that time, MBAG determined the population of vehicles that had used the previous battery mounting.
On September 23, 2022, MBAG determined out of an abundance of caution that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.
There have been no warranty claims, field or service reports, and other information (such as the numbers of deaths and/or injuries) related to such a battery movement incident in the USA.

Campaign No. 2022100009, December 2022 TO: ALL MERCEDES-BENZ CENTERS SUBJECT: Model CLS-Class and E-Class (257 and 213 platform) Model Year 2019-2022 Install 12 Volt Battery Support Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain MY19-22 CLS-Class and E-Class (257 and 213 platform) vehicles, the 12V battery in the trunk might be dislodged in the event of a crash and subsequently detach from its electrical connections. This, in-turn, may lead to impairment of post-crash functions such as eCall, electric seat adjustment, hazard warning lights, and automatic door unlocking, which could increase the risk of injury for the vehicle occupants. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will install additional mounting support for the 12V battery on the affected vehicles. Prior to performing this Campaign: VMI must always be checked before performing campaigns to verify that the campaign is required on a specific vehicle. Always check for any other open campaigns, and perform accordingly. Please review the entire Campaign bulletin and follow the repair procedure exactly as described. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : In the event of a crash, the 12V battery could move in the spare wheel well. Thus, a detachment of the electrical connections from the battery cannot be ruled out. In that event, various post-crash functions such as eCall, electric seat adjustment, hazard warning lights, and automatic door unlocking could be impaired or inoperative. This may increase the risk of injury for the vehicle occupants. Description of the Cause : Due to a deviation in the development process, the 12V battery mount(s) might not withstand certain mechanical loading in the event of a crash. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : The driver would not receive a warning due to the nature of the failure mechanism. Technische Kunststo Address : Max Schwarz – Str. 23 Lahnstein Foreign States 56107 Country : Germany Chronology : In early 2021, MBAG detected an irregularity in a single internal standard crash test in which a 12V battery moved as a result of the crash.
