November, 2022 Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain model year 2022 C-Class sedan vehicles. Our records indicate that your vehicle is included in the affected population. What is the concern? Moisture accumulation in the trunk may leak into the rear Signal Acquisit ion Module (“SAM”), and cause an electrical short circuit. An electrical short circuit in the SAM could lead to various malfunctions, such as rear exterior lighting failure, unintentional rear seatback folding, and rearview camera failure, which could increase the risk of a crash or inj ury. In addition, an electrical short circuit might increase the risk of a fi re. When the issue occurs, depending on the affected function, a respective warning message is displayed in the instrument cluster. Unfortunately, the parts to remedy this are not yet available. We are working to obtain the necessary parts to correct this condition as quickly as possible. Mercedes-Benz received warranty claims potentially related to water ingress into the vehicles’ trunks and investigated those claims. In the course of these investigations, it was determined that, in certain situations when the trunk lid is wet, opening the trunk lid could cause water to drip into the trunk. Further analyses were conducted to determine whether and how such water might come into contact with the SAM. From May through July 2022, potential consequences of water entering the SAM were analyzed and complaint cases from the field were evaluated. In July and August 2022, Mercedes-Benz conducted additional tests and analyses regarding factors potentially contributing to water ingress into the trunk. In parallel, the Company identified potentially affected vehicles in the field. On September 2, 2022, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk could not be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall. MBAG is currently aware of 42 warranty claims in the US market received from May 17, 2022 through August 23, 2022. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : In this case, a short circuit might occur in the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM). In this connection, a risk of fire cannot be completely ruled out. Additionally, a short circuit could lead to various malfunctions. Among others, the exterior lighting at the rear of the vehicle might fail, the rear seatbacks might fold unintentionally, and the rearview camera might not be available. Thus, the risk of a crash or injury could be increased. Description of the Cause : Before the issue occurs, the driver will not receive a warning due to the nature of the failure mechanism.
