NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V679
Manufacturer Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC
Components ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL
Potential Number of Units Affected 4
Summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2021 GLB250 vehicles. The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) unit may be damaged, which can result in disabled anti-lock brakes (ABS), disabled electronic stability control (ESC), and an electrical short circuit.

Replace ESP Unit
This is to notify you of the Recall Campaign Launch to replace the ESP unit on 4 Model Year (“MY”) 2021 GLB-Class (247 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on October 21, 2022.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2021 GLB (247 platform) vehicles, the Electronic Stability Program (“ESP”) unit might have been damaged mechanically. In this case, moisture might ingress into the ESP control unit and internal components of the ESP unit might be affected from prior damage. As a consequence, ESP functions (e.g. vehicle stability control, ABS) might be deactivated and a risk of fire due to an internal short circuit cannot be ruled out. This could increase the risk of a crash or injury. When the issue occurs, the driver might notice illuminated warning lamps and warning messages regarding an ESP malfunction in the instrument cluster.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will replace the ESP unit on the affected vehicles.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed.
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY21 GLB-Class vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in Xentry. Once the repair is complete, the vehicle may be sold or leased.
Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s).
Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent MY21 GLB-Class vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.
Customer Notification Timeline
Customer letters will be mailed on 10/28/2022.

Chronology of Defect/Noncompliance Determination Supplement for ODI 22-00855-28420-10
In October 2020, MBAG launched initial investigations based on internal reports from the vehicle assembly plant after ESP malfunctions were detected during the vehicle end-of-line test. Subsequent analysis by the supplier was conducted and in January 2021 it was concluded that the observed malfunctions were caused by mechanical damage to the ESP units.
Between February and April 2021, analyses in the vehicle assembly plant were conducted to identify the cause for the observed damages. It was determined that the affected ESP units were damaged during removal from the vehicles in the assembly plant. Therefore, it was concluded that no relevance for vehicles in the field existed.
In the end of September 2021, MBAG was informed by the supplier that analyses of malfunctioning ESP units from the field identified mechanical damage to be the root cause.
From October 2021 onwards, investigations with the vehicle assembly plant were resumed in order to analyze how the damage on ESP units installed in vehicles could occur. In the course of the ongoing investigations, the analysis of serial number data from ESP units that exhibited malfunctions in the field rendered that all of those units were part of the same batch.
Subsequently, vehicles equipped with ESP units from the potentially affected batch were identified by analyzing production records and from December 2021 onwards, a plant rework campaign was started in order to block and rework vehicles still in the plant and logistics process and to identify potentially affected vehicles in the field.
In the further course of the analyses – and contrary to earlier assumptions – it was concluded that the batch of potentially affected ESP units might have been damaged during handling in the vehicle assembly plant before installation into the vehicles.
Between May and July 2022, potential consequences of the issue were evaluated and the field complaint situation was analyzed.
On September 2, 2022, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.
MBAG is currently aware of 2 warranty claims in the USA received on July 29, 2021 and April 12, 2022.
MBAG is not aware of any claims of crashes, injuries, or other third party damage as a result of this occurrence.

Background Issue Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2021 GLB (247 platform) vehicles, the Electronic Stability Program (“ESP”) unit might have been damaged mechanically. What We’re Doing MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will replace the ESP unit on the affected vehicles. Parts Remedy is not available at this time. Vehicles Affected Vehicle Model Year(s) 2021 Vehicle Model GLB-Class Vehicle Populations Total Recall Population 4 Total Vehicles in Dealer Inventory 0 Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY21 GLB-Class vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Next Steps/Notes Customer Notification Timeline Customer letters will be mailed after the remedy becomes available. AOMS/SOMS AOMs – This recall may generate questions from your dealers. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-679 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 In the further course of the analyses – and contrary to earlier assumptions – it was concluded that the batch of potentially affected ESP units might have been damaged during handling in the vehicle assembly plant before installation into the vehicles. Between May and July 2022, potential consequences of the issue were evaluated and the field complaint situation was analyzed. Please see Chronology Supplement. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will replace the ESP unit on the affected vehicles. Pursuant to 49 C.F.R. § 577.11(e), MBUSA does not plan to provide notice about pre-notice reimbursement to owners since none of the involved vehicles would have been previously subject to the condition described and all remain covered under the new vehicle warranty.
