Check Mounting of Rear Door Trim Bar
This is to notify you of the Recall Campaign launch to check the mounting of the rear door trim bar on 161,000 Model Year (“MY”) 2020-2022 GLE-Class and GLS-Class (W167 and X167 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on October 14, 2022.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2020-2022 GLE-Class and GLS-Class (167, X167 platform) vehicles, the fastening of the rear door window trim bars might not meet current production specifications. Under certain driving conditions, the trim bar might separate from the vehicle while driving. This might pose a risk of injury for other road users and increase the risk of a crash.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will check the installation of the trim bars on the rear door windows and rework them, if necessary.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed. Replacement rate is approximately .2%
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY20-22 GLE-Class and GLS-Class vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in Xentry. Once the repair is complete, the vehicle may be sold or leased.
Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s).
Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent MY20-22 GLE-Class and GLS-Class vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired
Customer Notification Timeline
Customer letters will be mailed approximately on October 28, 2022.
Check Mounting of Rear Door Trim Bar
Check/test procedure A
1. Lower side window on the right and left rear doors.
2. Check whether right and left window dividers (A, Figure 1) are seated tightly.
To do so, grasp the window divider in the upper area with your hand (Figure 1) and support it with your thumb on the fixed window (see Figure 2).
Then pull the window divider outward carefully (approx. 100 N / 22.5lbs of force) and check whether it is seated tightly.
The window divider must not work loose.
Ensure that the window divider is not jammed under the trim bar on the window frame
(B, Figure 2). This could cause a test error with regard to the holding ability of the trim element on the window divider. A gap of 1 mm from the window divider (A) to the window frame (B) is normal.
a. Window divider (A) works loose: Carry out check/test procedure B.
b. Window divider (A) does not work loose: End measure.
Check/test procedure B
If window divider is loose.
1. Remove window divider completely and check holder for window divider on frame of triangular window.
If no damage is visible, reinstall window divider and check again whether it is tightly seated
a. Holder for window divider broken: Carry out work procedure.
b. Holder for window divider not broken: End measure. Includes: Re-assembly of window divider
Work Procedure
1. Replace corresponding triangular window of rear door with loose window divider.
One or multiple holders for the window divider on the frame of the triangular window are broken (Figure 4).

Chronology of Defect/Noncompliance Determination Supplement for ODI 22-00855-28422-10
In March 2021, MBAG received isolated field reports from the US that trim bars were loose or had detached from a vehicle during driving. MBAG commenced an investigation, and began to retrieve damaged parts from the field for analysis. As part of that analysis, MBAG determined that the window trim detachments were not the result of a design or product specification error.
In an earlier recall, the design of the trim attachment had been modified to address this potential occurrence. In analyses in May-June 2021, MBAG determined that the parts involved in the current incidents were not subject to prior recall, and had been produced after the design change was implemented. In the summer of 2021, further analyses were conducted in order to determine the failure mechanism for the re-designed parts. These analyses suggested that certain rework measures in the vehicle assembly plant (which included a removal and re-installation of the trim bars) may not have been performed according to current production specifications. To mitigate that possibility, the company added a further manual “pull check” to the production process, and revised relevant work instructions in July 2021.
In July 2021, the documentation of the rework processes for different assembly lines were analyzed from the responsible production plant, including an effort to determine if a particular worker or assembly group may have caused such deviation.
From August through December 2021, MBAG continued its investigation and close review, attempting to pinpoint the timing and point in the process in which above mentioned errors may have occurred. However, due to a lack of sufficient documentation of rework that was directly carried out on the assembly line, MBAG was not able to identify or further limit specific factors.
In December 2021, the company implemented a further preventive measure consisting of an additional check with a pull check tool following installation of the trim bars on the assembly line. In an abundance of caution, at the end of January 2022, an additional process quality audit at the assembly line was implemented in order to ensure any installation process error was eliminated.
In March 2022, MBAG conducted a series of analyses and tests to identify potentially affected vehicles.
In parallel, MBAG conducted various test drives to determine what external factors, influences (e.g. automated car washes) and circumstances might result in a trim bar detaching from the vehicle. Because the production and rework errors appeared to be sporadic and did not follow a clear pattern,
In the summer of 2022 MBAG focused on determining the population and scope of potentially affected vehicles.
On September 2, 2022, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.
MBAG is currently aware of 75 related warranty claims/field reports/service reports received from October 08, 2019 to July 18, 2022 in the US.
MBAG is not aware of any claims of crashes, injuries, or other third party damage as a result of this occurrence.

Campaign No. 2022090010, October 2022 TO: SUBJECT: ALL MERCEDES-BENZ CENTERS Models GLE-Class and GLS-Class (W167, X167 platform) Model Year 2020-2022 Check Mounting of Rear Door Trim Bar Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2020-2022 GLE-Class and GLS-Class (W167, X167 platform) vehicles, the fastening of the rear door window trim bars might not meet current production specifications. Under certain driving conditions, the trim bar might separate from the vehicle while driving. This might pose a risk of injury for other road users and increase the risk of a crash. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will check the installation of the trim bars on the rear door windows and rework them, if necessary. Prior to performing this Campaign: VMI must always be checked before performing campaigns to verify that the campaign is required on a specific vehicle. Always check for any other open campaigns, and perform accordingly. Please review the entire Campaign bulletin and follow the repair procedure exactly as described. Ensure that the window divider is not jammed under the trim bar on the window frame (B, Figure 2). This could cause a test error with regard to the holding ability of the trim element on the window divider. A gap of 1 mm from the window divider (A) to the window frame (B) is normal. Address : 34505 W. 12 Mile Road Suite 300 Farmington Hills Michigan 48331 Country : United States Chronology : In March 2021, MBAG received isolated field reports from the US that trim bars were loose or had detached from a vehicle during driving.
