July 11, 2022 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 22V493000
Inoperative Rearview Camera Display/FMVSS 111
An inoperative rearview camera display reduces the driver’s rear view, increasing the risk of a crash.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V493
Manufacturer Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC
Components BACK OVER PREVENTION
Potential Number of Units Affected 8,530
Summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2022 AMG EQS53, EQS580, EQS450, 2021 S500, S580, and Maybach
S580 vehicles. The rearview camera may not display the rearview image due to a software error in the MBUX multimedia system. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, “Rear Visibility.”
Remedy
Dealers will update the MBUX multimedia system software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 19, 2022. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA’s number for this recall is 2022080002.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

Update MBUX Multimedia System Software
This is to notify you of the Recall Campaign launch to update the MBUX multimedia system software on 8,530 Model Year (“MY”) 2021-2022 EQS-Class and S-Class (223 and 297 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on August 5, 2022.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that on certain MY 2021-2022 EQS-Class and S-Class (223 and 297 platform) vehicles, the MBUX multimedia system software might not meet current production specifications. As a result, the central display might not be activated as intended when the vehicle is unlocked. In this case, the rearview camera image might not be displayed in the central display when the driver engages reverse gear. Instead, the central display would remain black. A deactivation or freezing of the rearview camera image during reverse driving can be excluded. A rearview camera picture that might not be available within 2.0 seconds (as required by FMVSS 111 S5.5.3) when beginning to back up might impair rear visibility which might increase the risk of a crash.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will update the MBUX multimedia system software on the affected vehicles.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed.
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY21-22 EQS-Class and S-Class vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in Star TekInfo. Once the repair is complete, the vehicle may be sold or leased.
Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s).
Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new MY21-22 EQS-Class and S-Class vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.
Customer Notification Timeline
Customer letters will be mailed approximately on August 19, 2022.

Supplement to Original Submission
Chronology of Defect/Noncompliance Determination
In April 2021, MBAG received isolated reports (outside the US) of the MBUX head unit central display failing to activate and remaining black upon unlocking of S-class vehicles. MBAG commenced an investigation in coordination with the supplier.
While these analyses were ongoing, the supplier started to develop a more robust software version as an adhoc measure. This software version was substituted in series production beginning in August 2021.
In parallel, the root cause analyses were still ongoing and potentially affected head units from the field were sent to the development department for further investigations.
In November 2021, MBAG received two field reports of a central display screen failure to activate (outside the US) in EQS model cars, and began to investigate those reports. Later, MBAG determined the reported display failures were similar to the ones in the S-class vehicles and initiated an investigation to determine if those occurrences may have a common cause.
In spring of 2022, the investigation determined that although the driver experiences the similar start up behavior of the central display —a black screen– the two cases had different causes within the software of the head unit.
For the S-class vehicles, MBAG identified a software deviation that could cause the central display not to activate upon unlocking the vehicle. For EQS vehicles, MBAG identified a different software deviation that could also cause the central display to stay black upon unlocking those vehicles.
In June 2022, MBAG determined and identified the potentially affected vehicle populations for both the S-class and the EQS vehicles in the field.
On July 01, 2022, MBAG determined that a potential non-compliance cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall of potentially affected S-class and EQS vehicles.
MBAG has received 5 confirmed warranty claims but no field or service reports, or reports of deaths or injuries related to potentially affected S-class non-compliances in the US. MBAG has received no confirmed US warranty claims, field or service reports, or reports of deaths or injuries related to this noncompliance for the few potentially affected EQS model vehicles in the US.

The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on August 5, 2022. Background Issue Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain MY 2021-2022 EQS-Class and S-Class (223 and 297 platform) vehicles, the MBUX multimedia system software might not meet current production specifications. As a result, the central display might not be activated as intended when the vehicle is unlocked. In this case, the rearview camera image might not be displayed in the central display when the driver engages reverse gear. Instead, the central display would remain black. A deactivation or freezing of the rearview camera image during reverse driving can be ruled out. A rearview camera image that might not be available within 2.0 seconds (as required by FMVSS 111 S5.5.3) when beginning to back up might impair rear visibility, which might increase the risk of a crash. What We’re Doing MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will update the MBUX multimedia system software on the affected vehicles. A rearview camera picture that might not be available within 2.0 seconds (as required by FMVSS 111 S5.5.3) when beginning to back up might impair rear visibility which might increase the risk of a crash. MBAG commenced an investigation in coordination with the supplier. While these analyses were ongoing, the supplier started to develop a more robust software version as an adhoc measure. This software version was substituted in series production beginning in August 2021. In parallel, the root cause analyses were still ongoing and potentially affected head units from the field were sent to the development department for further investigation. On July 1, 2022, MBAG determined that a potential non-compliance cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall of potentially affected S-class and EQS vehicles.
