July 1, 2022 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 22V467000
Vehicle May Detach from Tow Vehicle
A tow ring that detaches during vehicle transport or loading can increase the risk of a crash or injury.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V467
Manufacturer Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC
Components STRUCTURE
Potential Number of Units Affected 2,526
Summary
Mercedes-Benz, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2022 Mercedes-Benz
EQS 450, EQS 580 and AMG EQS53 vehicles. The front or rear bumper tow ring assembly may have insufficient thread depth, which can result in the tow ring detaching from the vehicle.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and replace the tow ring assembly thread, as necessary, free of charge. Owners notification letters were mailed August 24, 2022. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA’s number for this recall is 2020070019/20.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
Check if your Mercedes-Benz has a Recall
This is to notify you of a new Recall Campaign regarding the threaded tow points on 2,528 Model Year (“MY”) 2022 EQS-Class (297 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “PENDING” on July 08, 2022.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2022 EQS-Class (297 platform) vehicles, the threaded towing point in the front and/or rear bumper might not meet current production specifications. In this case, the required thread depth for the tow eye might not be sufficient. As a result, it cannot be ruled out that the connection to the tow eye may loosen when installed, which could increase the risk of an accident or injury during vehicle loading and transport.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will check the thread of the tow points on the affected vehicles and replace, if necessary.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed. Note a 20% replacement rate is expected.
Customer Notification Timeline
Customer letters will be mailed on approximately August 24, 2022.

Chronology :
In December 2021, MBAG launched initial investigations based on an internal finding regarding the tow point. This finding indicated the usage of an incorrect tow eye in the logistics process of vehicles. Usage of the correct version was immediately ensured at every point of the logistics process. In January 2022, further analyses were performed to identify potentially affected vehicles and a plant action was initiated to check and rework all vehicles still within the possession of MBAG. In parallel, possibly affected parts were requested to determine the possible consequences on the vehicles in the field.
In the course of these analyses, a further deviation affecting the tow point was detected. Analyses indicated that this additional deviation might have been caused by the coating process of the tow point at the supplier. In the end of February 2022, an additional cleaning of the tow point was implemented at the supplier. Detailed analyses of the possible consequences of the two deviations were analyzed in combination with each other and found the consequences to be identical in the end. MBAG can confirm there are no warranty claims, field or service reports, and other information (such as deaths or injuries) related to this defect.
On June 24, 2022, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.
