July 1, 2022 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 22V466000
Front Air Bag May Deploy Improperly/FMVSS 208
An air bag that does not deploy properly can increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V466
Manufacturer Mercedes-Benz
USA, LLC
Components AIR BAGS
Potential Number of Units Affected 81
Summary
Mercedes-Benz
, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2020 Mercedes-Benz
GLS 450 and GLS 580 vehicles. The front air bag wiring harness may be routed incorrectly, which can cause the air bag not to deploy properly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, “Occupant Crash Protection.”
Remedy
Dealers will correct the wiring harness routing, free of charge. Owners notification letters were mailed August 22, 2022. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA’s number for this recall is 2022070006.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
Check if your Mercedes-Benz has a Recall
This is to notify you of a New Recall Campaign to rework the wiring harness to the upfront SRS sensor on 81 Model Year (โMYโ) 2020 GLS-Class (167 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers.
Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as โPENDINGโ on July 8, 2022.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz
AG (โMBAGโ), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (โMYโ) 2020 GLS (167 platform) vehicles, the wiring harness to an upfront SRS sensor might be incorrectly positioned. As a result, the wiring harness may be susceptible to damage in the event of a frontal impact. In certain frontal crash circumstances, a second-stage frontal airbag deployment may be triggered when only a first-stage deployment is required. In such instances, certain requirements of FMVSS 208 regarding occupant load in one specific crash test might not be fully satisfied and may increase the risk of injury in a crash.
What Weโre Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealer will correct the wiring harness routing on the affected vehicles.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed.
Customer Notification Timeline
Customer letters will be mailed on August 19, 2022.

Chronology :
In March 2019, MBAG identified a deviation from its specifications for airbag deployment during an internal crash test. At this point, MBAG determined the deviation did not affect safety. Nevertheless, in July 2019 MBAG initiated a plant action to rework all affected vehicles. As part of a review of open plant actions in August 2021, MBAG determined that some vehicles might have been released from the production plant prior to being reworked. In the following months, MBAG conducted an extensive investigation to identify potentially affected vehicles in the field and possible effects of the wiring harness positioning issue described above.
Starting in January 2022, the investigation focused on possible implications regarding vehicle safety regulations in the U.S. and Canada. On June 25, 2022, MBAG determined that a non-compliance could not be ruled out for one specific crash test for a small number of vehicles released to the U.S. and Canada. Therefore, MBAG is filing this non-compliance report.
MBAG confirms that it has received no warranty claims, field or service reports, or reports of deaths or injuries related to this non-compliance.

Production Dates : APR 29, 2019 – FEB 13, 2020 VIN Range 1 : Begin : NR End : NR Not sequential Description of Noncompliance : Description of the Noncompliance : Mercedes-Benz AG (โMBAGโ), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (โMYโ) 2020 GLS (167 platform) vehicles, the wiring harness for a front airbag sensor might be damaged in the event of a front impact. In such instances, the requirements of FMVSS 208. S25.3 regarding occupant load in one specific crash test might not be fully satisfied. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-466 Page 2 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR ยง573 FMVSS 1 : 208 – Occupant crash protection FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : In certain frontal crash circumstances, a second-stage frontal airbag deployment may be triggered when only a first-stage deployment is required. In such instances, the requirements of FMVSS 208.S25.3 regarding occupant load in one specific crash test might not be fully satisfied. Therefore, a non-compliance cannot be ruled out for the specific frontal crash condition of a rigid wall with 100% overlap at 0 degrees at a speed between 13 and 16 mph for an unbelted 5th percentile adult female in an โout-ofpositionโ scenario. This specific crash situation may increase the risk of injury. Description of the Cause : Due to a deviation in the development and production process, the wiring harness for a front airbag sensor might be positioned incorrectly. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : The driver will not receive a warning due to the nature of the failure mechanism. Involved Components : Component Name 1 : Wiring harness Component Description : Wiring harness Component Part Number : A 167 540 19 37 Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : Mercedes-Benz AG Address : NR Foreign States Country : Germany Chronology : In March 2019, MBAG identified a deviation from its specifications for airbag deployment during an internal crash test. In the following months, MBAG conducted an extensive investigation to identify potentially affected Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-466 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR ยง573 vehicles in the field and possible effects of the wiring harness positioning issue described above. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will correct the wiring harness routing on the affected vehicles. Pursuant to 49 C.F.R. ยง 577.11(e), MBUSA does not plan to provide notice about pre-notice reimbursement to owners since none of the involved vehicles would have been previously subject to the condition described and all remain covered under the new vehicle warranty. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Vehicles outside of the recall population have the wiring harness routed according to current production specifications. Remedy part: A 167 540 19 37 Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : A change in the development procedure ensures that this issue can no longer occur from February 14, 2020 onwards. Recall Schedule : Description of Recall Schedule : Dealers will be notified of the pending voluntary recall campaign on July 8, 2022. Owners were notified of the voluntary recall campaign on August 22, 2022. A copy of all communications will be provided when available.
