Window Air Bag Mounted Incorrectly/FMVSS 226
The driver-side window air bag may not function properly during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V860
Manufacturer Mercedes-Benz
USA, LLC
Components AIR BAGS
Potential Number of Units Affected 46
Summary
Mercedes-Benz
USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2021 GLB 250 and AMG GLB 35 vehicles. The driver-side window air bag may not have been mounted correctly to the lower area of the A-pillar. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 226, “Ejection Mitigation.”
Remedy
Dealers will inspect the mounting of the driver-side window air bag and repair it as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 2021. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

Rework Mounting of the Window Airbag
This is to notify you of the Recall Campaign Launch to rework the mounting of the window airbag on 46 Model Year (โMYโ) 2021 247 (GLB-Class) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “Open” on December 10, 2021.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz
AG (โMBAGโ), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that on certain GLB-Class vehicles (247 platform), the driver-side window airbag might not have been mounted in the lower area of the A-pillar according to specifications. In the event of a crash with activation of the driver-side window airbag, the catch strap of the driver-side window airbag in the lower area of the A-pillar could detach. Therefore, the restraining effect of the window airbag might not function as specified in FMVSS 226 โejection mitigationโ, possibly increasing the risk of injury for the driver and left rear occupant.
What Weโre Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealer will rework the mounting of the driver-side window airbag on the affected vehicles.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed.
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY21 GLB-Class vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as โOPENโ and Work Instructions will be available in Star TekInfo. Once the repair is complete the vehicle may be sold or leased.
Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s).
Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new MY21 GLB-Class vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.
Customer Notification Timeline
Customer letters will be mailed approximately on December 21, 2021.

Chronology :
In the end of January 2021, a MBAG production plant reported that it was having difficulties mounting the driver-side window airbag in the lower area of the A-pillar. Measures were implemented on the assembly line to ensure that the driver-side window airbag is mounted according to specifications. As a follow up measure, the production plant initiated a plant action to confirm that all vehicles that had been built prior to the implementation of these measures were equipped with a correctly installed driver-side window airbag. During a review of the plant action, MBAG found that vehicles may have been released from the plant prior to being inspected for the correct installation of the driver-side window airbag.
Beginning of March, MBAG initiated analyses with regard to possible effects of the described issue. It was found that even in the event of an incorrect mounting of the driver-side window airbag in the lower area of the Apillar, the inflation of the driver-side window airbag might only deviate slightly. In the following months, test results were analyzed with regard to a potential safety impact. In September further analysis were conducted to asses potential deviations from requirements specified in FMVSS.
On October 29, 2021, MBAG decided to conduct a recall due to the resulting non-compliance with portions of FMVSS 226.

CENTERS SUBJECT: Model GLB-Class (247 platform) Model Year 2021 Rework Mounting of the Window Airbag Mercedes-Benz
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealer will rework the mounting of the driver-side window airbag on the affected vehicles. Prior to performing this Campaign: โข VMI must always be checked before performing campaigns to verify that the campaign is required on a specific vehicle. Always check for any other open campaigns, and perform accordingly. โข Please review the entire Campaign bulletin and follow the repair procedure exactly as described. Approximately 46 vehicles are affected. Order No. P-RC-2021110014 This bulletin has been created and maintained in accordance with MBUSA-SLP S423QH001, Document and Data Control, and MBUSA-SLP S424HH001, Control of Quality Record 2 P-RC-2021110014 Rework Mounting of the Window Airbag Model 247.6 Work Procedure 1.
