Starter-Generator Wiring Harness May Short

Summary
Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2021 Mercedes-Benz
Sprinter vehicles. A cable duct may drop out of place due to unlatched engagement hooks inside the battery case. This may cause the starter-generator wiring harness to chafe against the transmission carrier, which could result in an electrical short-circuit.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the engagement hooks on the affected cable duct with expanding rivets, free of charge. The recall began on November 2, 2021. Owners may contact DVUSA’s customer service at 1-877-762-8267. DVUSA’s number for this recall is VS3KABKAN.

This is to notify you of an initial Recall Campaign to Replace Battery Cable Attachment Hardware on approximately 38 MY21 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. All affected VINs will be flagged as “PENDING” in VMI and cannot be sold.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vans, has determined that on certain Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vehicles of Platform 907 (VS30) the engagement hooks of the cable duct under the starter-generator wiring harness might not fully latch on the battery case. If the engagement hooks of the cable duct do not correctly latch on the battery case, the cable duct could drop to the surface of the transmission carrier. Due to relative movement of the starter-generator wiring harness and the transmission carrier, rubbing could develop over the life of the vehicle and might lead to chafing on the wiring harness insulation, and to a potential short circuit. In a worst case, a fire at the wiring harness cannot be ruled out.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA is conducting a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz Sprinter dealer will replace the engagement hooks with the expanding rivets.

Chronology :
In June 2021, MBAG received notice from a production plant in Düsseldorf that a platform 907 Sprinter vehicle had insufficient space separating the starter-generator wiring harness from the transmission carrier in the left side of the VS30 vehicle´s underbody. After inspection of the vehicle in the production line, MBAG initiated an analysis if the vehicle was an isolated case or whether other vehicles could be affected. Further inspections of platform 907 Sprinter vehicles found that additional vehicles could experience insufficient separation of the wiring harness and the transmission carrier. The inspections determined that in some vehicles, the engagement hooks of the cable duct were not correctly latched within the battery case, and consequently the cable duct dropped to the surface of the transmission carrier.
Based on this finding, MBAG commenced a broader investigation. At the same time, MBAG suspended production of platform 907 Sprinter vehicles still in the plant in order to ensure the correct latching of the engagement hooks of the cable duct containing the starter-generator wiring harness.
In August 2021, MBAG development department’s investigation discovered that, during the introduction of the new wiring harness for the VS30 vehicles with a geometrical adapted cable duct in June 2021, the new cable duct was tested without the wiring harness. Because of the lack of testing with the wiring harness installed, VS30 vehicles produced since the introduction of the new cable duct since June 2021 were determined to be potentially affected vehicles.
MBAG assessed the potential effect of this phenomenon in different use scenarios during September 2021.
MBAG determined on September 29, 2021 that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to file a Part 573 report and conduct a recall.
