USA, LLC. (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2021 S500, S580, and Maybach
S580 vehicles. The air bag control unit software may deactivate the occupant recognition control unit, resulting in a deactivated front passenger air bag.
Remedy
Dealers will update the air bag control unit software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 1, 2021. MBUSA’s number for this recall is 2021100010. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.

This is to notify you of a new Recall Campaign to update the passenger seat occupant recognition system on 1,311 Model Year (โMYโ) 2021 223 (S-Class) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers.
Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “PENDING” on October 18, 2021.

AG (โMBAGโ) has determined that on certain Model Year (โMYโ) 2021 S-Class (223 platform) vehicles, the airbag control unit software might not meet specifications. The control unit for the occupant recognition might be deactivated permanently by the airbag control unit upon vehicle shut-down. As a consequence, the passenger airbag might be deactivated despite an occupant sitting on the front passenger seat. This could increase the risk of injuries for the passenger in the event of a crash with a potential airbag deployment.
What Weโre Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealer will update the airbag control unit software on the affected vehicles.

The remedy is available and can be performed.

Update Passenger Seat Occupant Recognition System
Model 223
- Ensure use of XENTRY Diagnosis version BD/DVD (06/2021) or higher.
- Before starting the work procedure, install the current version of all add-ons in XENTRY Diagnosis.
- Make sure to follow the operation steps exactly as described in XENTRY Diagnosis.
- Use a charger to ensure sufficient power supply of the vehicle on-board electrical system battery (greater than 12.5 V).
- If XENTRY Diagnosis is already connected to the vehicle, start with operation step 2.
If two or more software updates or SCN codings are performed during one workshop visit, operation items 02-4762 and 02-5058 may be invoiced only once for each workshop order.
Work Procedure
- Connect XENTRY Diagnosis.
- Update N2/5 Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) control unit software.
To do this, select menu item “Quick test view โ N2/5 Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) โ Adaptations โ
Configuration โ Manual settings โ Check of control unit software
- Action 0500 2021 0047 model 223 from SOP (except code 802)
- Action 0500 2021 0225 model 223 (with code 802)
Then follow the user guidance in XENTRY Diagnosis.
Disconnect XENTRY Diagnosis.
Chronology :
In November 2020, MBAG began to investigate reports from a manufacturing plant that on certain new S-Class vehicles, SRS warnings were displayed in the instrument cluster, indicating a potential airbag malfunction.
MBAGโs analysis initially identified a software issue that could lead to a warning light regarding the SRS. In January 2021, MBAG released a plant action to rework affected vehicles in the production plant and in vehicle preparation centers.
During this process, MBAGโs analyses found a further potential deviation of internal specifications that appeared to be associated with the new software remedy. In March 2021, MBAG identified additional vehicles potentially affected by the software deviations, and initiated plant actions to rework them. Further investigations from April through May 2021 analyzed potential causes of the two software deviations and their possible effects.
MBAGโs continuing investigation ultimately determined that the second suspected software deviation does not have any impact on vehicle safety regulations and specifications and therefore did not require a fix.
Accordingly, in August 2021, MBAG re-focused its analysis on the previously identified SRS warning. MBโs further review determined that the same software error that caused the SRS warning also could permanently deactivate the occupant recognition control unit for the front passenger seat.
MBAG completed its investigation in late September 2021. Based on that investigation, MBAG concluded that a potential safety risk could not be ruled out. Accordingly, on October 1, 2021, MBAG decided to conduct a recall of potentially affected vehicles.

vehicles has coverage for all required functions associated to reprogramming, initialization, and fault clearing of emission control modules (engine and transmission) fitted to vehicles 2004 Model Year and newer. Additionally all access and functionality required in regard the configuration via SCN Coding and/or CVN Coding is covered.
J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz
vehicles is delivered via DVD media which is delivered monthly for the license term of one year upon purchase.
- All control unit software (reprogramming calibrations) is contained within J2534 DVD media.
Terms and conditions
J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz
vehicles is purchased in 1-year license increments. During that license term the user will receive an initial software package, license key, SCN/CVN Coding information/access as well as monthly updates via DVD media.
- Additional updates of software after the 1st year can be purchased at additional cost, however are not required for the system to continue functioning.

AG (โMBAGโ) has determined that on certain Model Year (โMYโ) 2021 S-Class (223 platform) vehicles, the airbag control unit software might not meet specifications. The control unit for the occupant recognition might be deactivated permanently by the airbag control unit upon vehicle shut-down. As a consequence, the passenger airbag might be deactivated despite an occupant sitting on the front passenger seat. This could increase the risk of injuries for the passenger in the event of a crash with a potential airbag deployment. An authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealer will update the airbag control unit software on the affected vehicles.
