Possible Loss of Steering Control

A separated universal joint bearing can cause a loss of steering control and increase the risk of a crash.

Summary

Mercedes-BenzeBay logo USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2017 B250e, CLA250, 2017-2018 AMG CLA45, GLA250, and AMG GLA45 vehicles. The steering shaft bore hole for the universal joint bearing may allow excessive movement that, over time, could result in the separation of the bearing and universal joint.

 

Remedy

MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect, and as necessary, replace the steering shaft, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 23, 2021. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA’s number for this recall is 2021060001.

This is to notify you of a new Recall Campaign to check the steering shaft on 4,992 Model Year (“MY”) 2017-2018 CLA-Class, GLA-Class and B-Class (117 156 242 platform) vehicles.  The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers.  Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “PENDING” on April 9, 2021.

Background

Issue Mercedes-BenzeBay logo AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-BenzeBay logo vehicles, has determined that on certain MY17-18 CLA-Class (117 platform), GLA-Class (156 platform), and B-Class (242 platform) vehicles, the bore hole in the steering shaft for the universal joint bearing might not meet current production specifications. In this case, small movements between the universal joint bearing and the bore hole in the steering shaft might occur. Over time, this play could increase and lead to noises and an imprecise steering feel. If the symptoms are not recognized over a longer period, the bearing could separate from the universal joint. In this case, the ability to steer the vehicle would be impaired, which could increase the risk of a crash. Before the issue occurs the customer may be made aware of the issue by noises or an imprecise steering feel.
What We’re Doing MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall.  An authorized Mercedes-BenzeBay logo dealer will check the steering shaft on the affected vehicles and replace it, if necessary.
Parts Remedy is not available at this time. An additional notification will be sent once the remedy is available.

Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY17-18 CLA-Class, GLA-Class, and B-Class vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.  Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in Star TekInfo.  Once the repair is complete the vehicle may be sold or leased.

Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s)

Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new MY17-18 CLA-Class, GLA-Class, and B-Class vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

  • VMI must always be checked before performing campaigns to verify that the campaign is required on a specific vehicle. Always check for any other open campaigns, and perform accordingly.
  • Please review the entire Recall Campaign bulletin and follow the repair procedure exactly as described.

 

Please note that Recall Campaigns do not expire and may also be performed on a vehicle with a vehicle status indicator.

This bulletin has been created and maintained in accordance with MBUSA-SLP S423QH001, Document and
Data Control, and MBUSA-SLP S424HH001, Control of Quality Records.

Check/test procedure 

  

  1. Read off serial number on label of lower steering shaft and check (Figure 1).

For this purpose, turn steering wheel if necessary until label can be seen.

 

  1. Document the serial number in the repair order.

 

  1. Search the table below whether the serial number is present in the serial number table.

For a quick search use the search function ctrl+f and enter the serial number (Figure 2).

 

a. If the serial number is present in the serial number table, then “Replace lower steering shaft”.

 

b. If the serial number is not present (Figure 3), in the serial number table then “No further action”.              The search could take 1-2 minutes.
