Starter Power Cable May Short Circuit
Damaged wires may cause a short circuit and result in a vehicle stall, increasing the risk of a crash. Also, a short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.

Summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2018-2021 E63S AMG, E63S AMG Wagon, 2019-2021 AMG GT63 4-door, and AMG GT63S 4-door vehicles. The starter motor positive cable may not have been installed correctly, potentially allowing the power supply harness wires to chafe.
Remedy
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, as necessary, correct the screw connections and position of the positive cable, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed May 18, 2021. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA’s number for this recall is 2021040013.

| Issue | Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain MY 18-21 AMG E-Class (213 platform) and AMG GT 4-door Coupe (290 platform) vehicles with an AMG Gasoline-engine (M177) and 4MATIC all-wheel drive, the positive cable from the power supply to the starter motor might not have been installed according to current production specifications. An incorrect screw connection at the starter motor could cause the harness from the power supply to the starter to contact the starter housing. As a result, the insulated wires of the power supply harness could experience chafing over time due to vehicle movement, which could result in a short circuit. Depending on the nature of the short circuit, different vehicle functions may be affected, and the vehicle could stall, which could increase the risk of a crash. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in Xentry. Once the repair is complete, the vehicle may be sold or leased. - VMI must always be checked before performing campaigns to verify that the campaign is required on a specific vehicle. Always check for any other open campaigns, and perform accordingly.
- Please review the entire Recall Campaign bulletin and follow the repair procedure exactly as described.
Please note that Recall Campaigns do not expire and may also be performed on a vehicle with a vehicle status indicator.

Check/test procedure A
- Remove lower engine compartment lining
For basic data for model 213, see AR61.20-P-1105LWE.
For basic data for model 290, see AR61.20-P-1105FRX.
The starter wiring harness, circuit 30 must not be in contact with the solenoid switch (B) of the starter.
The findings from the check/test procedure must be recorded in writing in the work order

- Disconnect ground line of battery
For basic data for model 213, see AR54.10-P-0003LW.
For basic data for model 290, see AR54.10-P-0003FR.
The insulation must not be damaged. To improve accessibility, remove the quick-release fastener of the steering shaft if necessary.
If the insulation is not damaged, the starter wiring harness, circuit 30 must be reinstalled correctly and in such a way that it does not chafe, taking the anti-twist lock at the solenoid switch into account.
The findings from the check/test procedure must be recorded in writing in the work order
Work procedure
- Remove heat shield (C, figure 2) above busbar.
- Remove cover (D, figure 3) of busbar and release starter wiring harness at circuits 30 and 50 (1, figure 3).
Installation:
Circuit 30 Nm 17
Circuit 50 Nm 6A
- Remove heat shield (E, figure 4).
- Remove heat shields (F, figure 5 and G, figure 6).
- Release clamp (H, figure 7) at starter wiring harness from holder.
Release clamp from underneath and slide in direction of arrow.
- Release circuits 30 and 50 (I, figure 8) at starter.
- Release lower clamp of starter wiring harness from holder.
Same procedure as described in operation step 5.
- Remove starter wiring harness and replace.
Only the electrical wiring harness (2, figure 9) from the busbar to the starter will be replaced. The wiring harness from the busbar to the alternator is not required.
The starter wiring harness, circuit 30 must be reinstalled correctly and in such a way that it does not chafe, taking the anti-twist lock at the solenoid switch into account.
- Assemble in reverse order.

Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in
certain Model Year (“MY”) 2018-2021 E-Class, and GT-Class vehicles. Our records indicate that your vehicle is included in the affected population of
vehicles.
What is the CONCERN? On certain MY 2018-2021 AMG E-Class and AMG GT-Class 4-door coupe vehicles equipped with an AMG gasolineengine
and 4MATIC all-wheel drive, the positive cable from the power supply to the starter motor might not have
been installed according to current production specifications. In the event of an incorrect screw connection, the
power supply cable to the starter might contact the starter housing. Over time, such contact could lead to chafing
of the wire insulation on the power supply cable which could lead to a short circuit. Depending on the nature
of the short circuit, different vehicle functions may be affected. This includes the potential of a vehicle stall, which
could increase the risk of a crash, or a risk of a fire.
What will your DEALER DO? An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will check the affected vehicles and reinstall the starter harness according
to specification, if necessary. This service will be provided free of charge. We are dedicated to always delivering
the best customer experience, and respect for your time is a top priority. While the minimum repair time can be
less than 3.5 hours, your dealer can provide you with a better estimate of the overall time for this service visit. As
a matter of normal service process, an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will also check for other repair measures
