Summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2020 CLA45 AMG vehicles equipped with 4-cylinder gasoline engines. Incorrect spark plugs may have been installed, which could come apart over time and cause engine damage.
Remedy
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the spark plugs, free of charge. The recall began April 14, 2021. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.

| Issue | Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2020 CLA-Class (118 platform) vehicles with a 4-cylinder gasoline engine (M139), an incorrect variant of the spark plug might have been installed. In this case, an increased mechanical wear of the spark plug from thermal overload could occur over time. This may cause parts of the spark plug to possibly detach within the combustion chamber, potentially leading to engine damage. In this case, stalling of the vehicle cannot be ruled out, which could increase the risk of a crash. | |||

Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as โOPENโ and Work Instructions will be available in Star TekInfo. Once the repair is complete, the vehicle may be sold or leased.
Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2020 CLA-Class (118 platform) vehicles with a 4-cylinder gasoline engine (M139), an incorrect variant of the spark plug might have been installed which could affect the safety and emissions of the vehicle. In this case, an increased mechanical wear of the spark plug from thermal overload could occur over time. This may cause parts of the spark plug to detach within the combustion chamber, potentially leading to engine damage. In this case, stalling of the vehicle cannot be ruled-out, which could increase the risk of a crash. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will replace the spark plugs on the affected vehicles.
Prior to performing this Recall Campaign:
- MI must always be checked before performing campaigns to verify that the campaign is required on a specific vehicle. Always check for any other open campaigns, and perform accordingly.
- Please review the entire Recall Campaign bulletin and follow the repair procedure exactly as described.
Please note that Recall Campaigns do not expire and may also be performed on a vehicle with a vehicle status indicator.

Work procedure
The following step applies to California dealers only.
Apply Proof of Correction Label (A 000 584 54 13) to area identified in Figure 1. Fill in the blank areas of the label. The campaign number for the California Proof of Correction is unique and must be entered as such (210311), your dealer code, and the date of the repair, using a black permanent marker.
Note: Clean bonding surface prior to affixing label.

Dear Mercedes-Benz Owner:
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Mercedes-Benz AG (โMBAGโ), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Model Year 2020 CLA-Class vehicles. Our records indicate that your vehicle is included in the affected population of vehicles.
What is the CONCERN?
Mercedes-Benz AG (โMBAGโ), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that in certain Model Year (โMYโ) 2020 CLA-Class vehicles with a 4-cylinder gasoline engine, an incorrect type of a spark plug might have been installed which could affect the safety and emissions of the vehicle. As a result, increased mechanical wear of the spark plug from high-heat overload could occur over time and cause parts of the spark plug to possibly detach within the combustion chamber, leading to engine damage. If this occurs, the engine may stall, which could increase the risk of a crash.
What will your DEALER DO?
An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will replace the spark plugs on the affected vehicles. This service will be provided free of charge. We are dedicated to always delivering the best customer experience, and respect for your time is a top priority. While the minimum repair time can be less than 1 hour, your dealer can provide you with a better estimate of the overall time for this service visit. As a matter of normal service process, an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will also check for other repair measures which might be applicable to your vehicle and this may increase the required working time.
