A separated windshield may reduce the effectiveness of the passenger air bag restraint system and increase the risk of injury in a crash.

Summary

Mercedes-BenzeBay logo USA, LLC. (MBUSA) is recalling one 2020 GLE 450 vehicle. The windshield may not have been bonded correctly to the vehicle, possibly allowing it to separate from the vehicle and affect the full protective function of the passenger’s frontal air bag in the event of a crash.

 

Remedy

MBUSA will notify the owner, and a dealer will inspect the windshield bonding and repair it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began August 31, 2020. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA’s number for this recall is 2020080014.

The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VIN will be flagged in VMI as “PENDING” on August 14, 2020.
Background
IssueMercedes-BenzeBay logo AG, (“MBAG”) the manufacturer of Mercedes-BenzeBay logo vehicles, has determined that on a certain Model Year (“MY”) 2020 GLE-Class (167 platform) vehicle, the bonding of the windshield might not meet the specifications. An incorrectly bonded windshield might separate from the vehicle body in case of an accident. In case of an activation of the passenger airbag, the windshield might not be able to support the airbag as intended. As a consequence, the restraint effect of the passenger airbag could be impaired, potentially increasing the risk of injury for the front passenger.
What We’re DoingMBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-BenzeBay logo dealer will check the windshield bonding on the affected vehicle and rework it, if necessary.
PartsParts are not required for repair. However, the current remedy is not available at this time. An additional notification will be sent once the remedy is available.

Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY20 GLE-Class vehicles in dealer inventory     covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.  Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in Star TekInfo. Once the repair is complete, the vehicle may be sold or leased. 

Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s) 

Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new MY20 GLE-Class vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

 

Mercedes-BenzeBay logo AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-BenzeBay logo vehicles, has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Model Year (“MY”) 2020 GLE-Class vehicle.  Our records indicate that your vehicle is included in the affected population.

 

What is the CONCERN?

On a certain Model Year (“MY”) 2020 GLE-Class vehicle, the bonding of the windshield might not meet the specifications. In case of an activation of the passenger airbag, the windshield might not be able to support the airbag as intended. As a consequence, this could reduce the effectiveness of the passenger airbag restraint system, potentially increasing the risk of injury for the front passenger
