Summary

Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vehicles. The chassis may be missing the additional stabilization required for its cargo capacity. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 126, “Electronic Stability Control Systems.”

 

Remedy

DVUSA will notify owners, and dealers will upgrade the chassis by replacing the stabilizer bar on the front axle and replacing shock absorbers and installing a stabilizer bar on the rear axle, free of charge. DVUSA issued owners an interim notification on September 18, 2020. The recall began October 1, 2020. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267. DVUSA’s number for this recall is VS3FAHRBA.

This is to notify you of the upcoming Recall Campaign concerning the chassis update on 3.88t vehicles on approximately 3 MY19 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans.  The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers.  All affected VINs will be flagged as “PENDING” in VMI.
Background
Issue	Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz, has determined that on certain Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vehicles from platform 907 (VS30) with a permissible total weight of 3.88t, a chassis was installed during the production start-up phase without an additional stabilization stage.  This could lead to negative driving behavior effects in highly dynamic driving situations which could increase the risk of a crash.
What We’re Doing	MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will upgrade the chassis on the affected vehicles by replacing the stabilizers on the front axle and by replacing the shock absorbers and installing stabilizers on the rear axle.
Parts	Parts are still being verified. An additional notification will be sent when parts are available for repair.

Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY19 Sprinter vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.   Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired.   Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for rental companies to rent new MY19 Sprinter vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Sprinter vans, has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Model Year 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vehicles.  Our records indicate that your vehicle is included in the affected population of vehicles.

 

MBAG determined that on certain Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vehicles with a permissible total weight of 3.88 tons, a chassis was installed during the production start-up phase without an additional stabilization stage.  This could lead to negative driving behavior effects in highly dynamic driving situations which could increase the risk of a crash. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will upgrade the chassis on the affected vehicles by replacing the stabilizers on the front axle and by replacing the shock absorbers and installing stabilizers on the rear axle.

 

We want to assure you that MBAG is taking all necessary measures to remedy this situation for you. Unfortunately, replacement parts are not yet available for your vehicle, and we will contact you again once parts become available.

 

As soon as a suitable replacement part is available for your vehicle, we will send another letter notifying you to bring your vehicle to your local authorized Mercedes-Benz Sprinter dealer to repair your vehicle free of charge. While the minimum repair time can be up to approximately 3.5hrs, your dealer can provide you with a better estimate of the overall time for this service visit.
