June 5, 2020 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 20V328000
Left Rear Seat Back Electric Latch May Fail
In the event of a crash, if the left-rear seatback latch fails, it can increase the risk of injury.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V328
Manufacturer Mercedes-Benz
USA, LLC.
Components SEATS
Potential Number of Units Affected 1,352
Summary
Mercedes-Benz
USA, LLC. (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2020 E450, AMG E63S, GLC300, AMG GLC43, AMG GLC63, AMG GT53, and AMG GT63 vehicles equipped with rear seatbacks that can be electrically unlatched. The left-rear seatback latch may not be strong enough to withstand certain loads. If cargo were to strike the left-rear seatback, the latch may fail.
Remedy
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the left-rear seatback latch, free of charge. The recall began August 17, 2020. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA’s number for this recall is 2020070004.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
Check if your Mercedes-Benz has a Recall
This is to notify you of the Recall Campaign Launch to replace the left rear seatback latch in 1,351 Model Year (“MY”) 2020 E-Class (213 platform), GLC-Class (253 platform) and AMG GT-Class 4-doors Coupe (290 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on August 11, 2020.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz
AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2020 E-Class (213 platform), GLC-Class (253 platform) and AMG GT-Class 4-doors Coupe (290 platform) vehicles equipped with rear seatbacks that can be electrically unlatched, the left rear seatback latch might not meet current production specifications. If the rear seatback latch does not meet specifications, its basic functionality remains, but in the event of a crash, if the cargo area is loaded, the cargo could strike the left rear seatback seat. In this case, a seatback latch failure cannot be ruled out, which could increase the risk of injury to occupants.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealer will replace the left rear seatback latch on the affected vehicles.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed.
Customer Notification Timeline
Customer letters will be mailed on August 17, 2020.

Chronology :
At the end of January 2020, MBAG launched initial investigations based on a finding in a requalification test at a supplier. These investigations indicated a potential deviation in the material strength of components of the left rear seatback latch.
MBAG and the supplier investigated the issue further and found that the sub-supplier who produces the seat latch component had temporarily used the incorrect heat treatment. The processes on the sub-supplier’s heat treatment did not comply with the required production parameters. A review of production- and logistic documentation was performed by the supplier to determine the respective production range of the potentially affected seatback latches.
In parallel, MBAG conducted an evaluation of the strength forces of the lock as produced. MBAG’s analysis found the possibility that the latching mechanism may not maintain its intended strength under certain loads.
On May 29, 2020, MBAG determined that a potential safety consequence could not be ruled out.

Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : An authorized Mercedes-Benz
dealer will replace the left rear seatback latch on the affected vehicles. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will replace the left rear seatback latch on the affected vehicles. Pursuant to 49 C.F.R. § 577.11(e), MBUSA does not plan to provide notice about pre-notice reimbursement to owners since none of the involved vehicles would have been previously subject to the condition described and all remain covered under the new vehicle warranty.
