Rear Axle Carrier Bolt Connection May Fail

Unexpected changes in the vehicle’s handling can increase the risk of a crash.

Summary

Mercedes-BenzeBay logo USA, LLC. (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2019 SL450, SL63 AMG, and SL550 vehicles. Over time, the bolt connection at the front-left mounting point on the rear axle carrier casting may fail, possibly affecting the vehicle’s handling.

 

Remedy

MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front-left mounting point of the rear axle carrier. If a defect in the bolt connection of the rear axle carrier is found, MBUSA will contact the owner and offer a repurchase of the vehicle. The recall began November 22, 2019. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA’s number for this recall is 2019100018.

This is to notify you of the Recall Campaign launch regarding the mounting of the rear axle carrier on 36 Model Year (โ€œMYโ€)19 231 (SL-Class) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as โ€œOPENโ€ on November 08, 2019.
Background
IssueMercedes-BenzeBay logo AG (โ€œMBAGโ€), the manufacturer of Mercedes-BenzeBay logo vehicles, has determined that on certain MY 2019 SL-Class vehicles (231 platform), the mounting point of the left side beam on the rear axle carrier might not meet current production specification.  Due to a deviation in the production process at the supplier, occlusions might have been introduced during the casting process in the area of the front left mounting point. Depending on the position and size of the occlusion in the front left mounting point, the load capacity of this bolt connection might be impaired. Over time, this might lead to a failure of this bolt connection, which would result in significant knocking noise emanating from the rear axle.  If the customer were to ignore these pre-warning noises over a longer period of time, it is possible that the remaining three bolt connections could also fail, thereby affecting vehicle handling, and increasing the risk of a crash.
What Weโ€™re DoingMBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-BenzeBay logo dealer will check the front left bolt connection of the rear axle carrier on the affected vehicles. If the bolt connection is impaired, the defect would be irreparable.  In that event, a repurchase of the customerโ€™s vehicle will be considered.

-Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until the campaign is completed.   As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s) 

 -Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new MY19 SL-Class vehicles covered by this notification until the campaign is completed on the  vehicle.

  • Please review the entire Recall Campaign bulletin and follow the repair procedure exactly as described.

Please note that Recall Campaigns do not expire and may also be performed on a vehicle with a vehicle status indicator.

Check/test procedure

  1. Lift vehicle with vehicle lift.
  2. Unscrew the M12 screw on the front left rear axle carrier.

Secure the rear axle with the transmission jack.

  1. Check thread with endoscope over the entire thread length.

b. Thread Axle mounting (A) not damaged: Replace bolt* and End action

Work procedure 

 

  1. If the threads are damaged, create detailed pictures of the damaged threads and clarify further repair procedure using PTSS-case.
  • Submit PTSS-case via. Xentry portal

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Mercedes-BenzeBay logo AG (โ€œMBAGโ€), the manufacturer of Mercedes-BenzeBay logo vehicles, has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Model Year (โ€œMYโ€) 2019 SL-Class. Our records indicate that your vehicle is included in the affected population of vehicles.

What is the CONCERN?MBAG has determined that on certain MY 2019 SL-class vehicles (231 platform), the mounting point of the left side beam on the rear axle carrier might not meet current production specification. Due to a deviation in the production process at the supplier, a manufacturing defect might have been introduced during the casting process in the area of the front left mounting point.  If this occurred, the load capacity of this bolt connection might be impaired. Over time, this might lead to a failure of the front left bolt connection, which would result in significant knocking noise emanating from the rear axle.  If the vehicle continues to be driven in this condition, it is possible that the remaining three bolt connections could also fail, thereby affecting vehicle handling, and increase the risk of a crash.
What will your DEALER DO?An authorized Mercedes-BenzeBay logo dealer will check the front left bolt connection of the rear axle carrier on the affected vehicles.  Should the bolt connection be found to be defective, your dealer will inform MBUSA who will contact you directly to offer a repurchase of the vehicle.  This service will be provided free of charge.  We are dedicated to always delivering the best customer experience, and respect for your time is a top priority. While the minimum repair time can be up to 1.0 hour, your dealer can provide you with a better estimate of the overall time for this service visit.  As a matter of normal service process, an authorized Mercedes-BenzeBay logo dealer will also check for other repair measures which might be applicable to your vehicle and this may increase the required working time.
