Water in the passenger compartment may affect the vehicle’s electrical systems, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Summary

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2020 GLE350 4Matic and GLE450 4Matic vehicles. A welding error during production may have resulted in a small hole in the floor, possibly allowing water to leak into the passenger cabin.

 

Remedy

MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will seal the affected area, free of charge. The recall began July 31, 2019. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA’s number for this recall is 2019060007.

This is to notify you of a new Recall Campaign regarding the potential for water ingress into the right side of the passenger compartment on 753 Model Year (“MY”) 2020 GLE-Class (167 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on July12, 2019.
Background
Issue		Daimler AG, the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2020 GLE-Class vehicles (167 platform), a welding stud on the main floor may not have been welded according to specification. As a result, a small hole may be present in the main floor in the vehicle’s underbody. If the vehicle were to attempt to cross standing water over 15 inches deep, some water could enter the vehicle passenger compartment via the hole in the main floor on the right-side of the vehicle. If sufficient amounts of water enter the vehicle, several electrical contacts could be affected, impacting their functionality. Additionally, a risk of engine stalling cannot be ruled out, increasing the risk of a crash.
What We’re Doing		MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will seal the hole in the main floor on the affected vehicles.

Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY20 GLE-Class vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.  Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in Star TekInfo Once the repair is complete, the vehicle may be sold or leased. Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s) Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new MY20 GLE-Class vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

Daimler AG, the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2020 GLE-Class vehicles (167 platform), a welding stud on the main floor may not have been welded according to specification. As a result, a small hole may be present in the main floor in the vehicle’s underbody. If the vehicle were to attempt to cross standing water over 15 inches deep, some water could enter the vehicle passenger compartment via the hole in the main floor on the right-side of the vehicle. If sufficient amounts of water enter the vehicle, several electrical contacts could be affected, impacting their functionality. Prior to performing this Recall Campaign:

• Please check VMI to determine if the vehicle is involved in the Campaign and if it has been previously repaired. Always Check VMI for any open campaigns, and perform accordingly.
• Please review the entire Recall Campaign bulletin and follow the repair procedure exactly as described.

Please note that Recall Campaigns do not expire and may also be performed on a vehicle with a vehicle status indicator.

Approximately 753 vehicles are involved.

Procedure

 

1. Remove right front floor covering.

For basic data, see AR68.80-P-0008ME.

 

2. Remove wear protection cover.

For basic data, see AR54.15-P-1351ME.

The wear protection is marked as number 3 in the AR document.

 

3. Seal weld studs on vehicle floor in right footwell all around (Figure 1). Observe drying time of seam seal.
