Loss of power steering assist would require a higher steering effort, especially at lower speeds, which may increase the risk of a crash.

Summary
Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2016-2017 Metris vehicles sold, or ever registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Washington DC, West Virginia and Wisconsin. The aluminum bolts that attach the power steering gear assist motor to the gear housing may corrode and fracture causing a reduction or complete loss of power steering assist.
Remedy
DVUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the aluminum bolts with steels bolts, free of charge. DTNA issued owners an interim notification on June 3, 2019. The recall began November 15, 2019. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267. DVUSA’s number for this recall is VS2SCHRALU.

| This is to notify you of the upcoming Recall Campaign to replace the aluminium bolts with steel ones and apply wax to the steering gear on all potentially affected Metris vehicles on approximately 3,704 MY16-MY17 Mercedes-Benz Metris (447) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. All affected VINs will be flagged as “PENDING” in VMI. | |||

Issue | DAG determined that the aluminum bolts affixing the steering gear housing cover and the aluminum bolts affixing the power pack could corrode due to the intrusion of moisture and road salt (brine) while the vehicle is operating in certain geographic areas with high salt concentrations. Advanced corrosion can weaken the strength of the bolts. If all three of the mounting bolts on the power pack become compromised, the power pack could separate from the steering gear and cause the power steering to fail, increasing the risk of a crash. | ||

Dear Mercedes-Benz Metris Owner:
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Daimler AG (“DAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vans, has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Model
Year 2016 – 2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris vehicles. Our records indicate that your vehicle is included in the affected population of vehicles.
| What is the CONCERN? | DAG determined that the aluminum bolts affixing the steering gear housing cover and the aluminum bolts affixing the power pack might corrode due to the intrusion of moisture and road salt (brine) while the vehicle is operating in certain geographic areas with high salt concentrations. Advanced corrosion can weaken the strength of the bolts. If all three of the mounting bolts were compromised due to corrosion, the power pack could separate from the steering gear and cause the power steering to fail, increasing the risk of a crash. |
| What will your DEALER DO? | An authorized Mercedes-Benz Metris dealer will replace the aluminium bolts with steel ones and apply wax to the steering gear. This service will be provided free of charge. We are dedicated to always delivering the best customer experience, and respect for your tme is a top priority. While the minimum repair time can be up to approximately 5 hours, your dealer can provide you with a better estimate of the overall time for this service visit. As a matter of normal service process, an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will also check for other repair measures which might be applicable to your vehicle and this may increase the required working time. |
