Rear Fog Lights May Not Turn On

The lack of functioning rear fog lamps prevents the enhanced visibility of the vehicle to other drivers on the road, increasing the risk of crash.

Summary

Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter VS30 vehicles equipped with LED rear fog lights. The lights may not illuminate, despite the rear fog light switch being turned on.

 

Remedy

DVUSA will notify owners, and dealers will update the software settings of the control unit body controller, free of charge. The recall began April 18, 2019. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267.

This is to notify you of the Recall Campaign concerning the signal acquisition and actuation module on approximately 1,202 MY19 Sprinter (907) vehicles.  The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers.  All affected vehicles will be flagged as “Open” in VMI on March 25, 2019.
Background
Issue	Daimler AG (“DAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vans, has determined that on certain Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vehicles (platform 907, open model designation) for the NAFTA market, the rear fog lamp in the LED rear lamps may not be activated at all or activated with a delay even though the vehicle’s rear fog light switch is in the “on” position and its activation is indicated to the driver in the instrument cluster.  In this case, the customer’s expectation regarding a safely functioning rear fog lamp might would not be met  which could increase the risk of an accident.
What We’re Doing	An authorized dealer will encode the signal acquisition and actuation module on the affected vehicles.

Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY19 Sprinter vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Loaner and demonstrator vehicles should not be driven, and must not be retailed until repaired. Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for rental companies to rent new MY19 Sprinter vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

Procedure

Check

1	Check, whether the vehicle is affected by the measure	For authorized Mercedes‑Benz service partners, only the entry in the „Extended VEGA Application“(EVA) system, in the “Current” tab, is decisive. An additional test of the affected vehicles in the workshop information system (WIS) or vehicle list is thereby not necessary.
SCN coding
2	Connect diagnostic system.	It is absolutely essential to precisely follow the operation steps as described in the vehicle diagnosis system.
3	Connect charging equipment. Maintaining onboard electrical system voltage when performing test and diagnosis work on vehicle	During the entire work procedure a sufficiently large voltage supply must be provided for the vehicle’s on-board electrical system. Otherwise any undervoltage that occurs may damage the control units. Follow the operating instructions for the charger. Use the charger to ensure that an adequate power supply (min. 12.5 V) is provided for the onboard electrical system battery.
4	Perform SCN coding in the signal acquisition and actuation module.	See process description in diagnostic system “INFO”.
5	Disconnect diagnostic system.
6	Remove charger from vehicle.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Daimler AG (DAG), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vehicles, has decided that a defect that relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Model Year 2019 Sprinter vehicles. Our records indicate that your vehicle is included in the affected population of vehicles.

What is the CONCERN?	DAG determined that on certain Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vehicles (VS30)(platform 907) for the NAFTA market, the rear fog lamp in the LED rear lamps may not be activated at all or with a delay despite the vehicle’s rear fog light switch being in the “on” position  and its activation  indicated in the instrument cluster. In this case, the safety expectation of the customer regarding a functioning rear fog lamp would not be met which could increase the risk of a crash.
What will your DEALER DO?	An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will update the software settings of the “Body controller” control unit for the potentially affected vehicles. This service will be provided free of charge.  We are dedicated to always delivering the best customer experience, and respect for your time is a top priority. While the minimum repair time can be up to approximately half an hour, your dealer can provide you with a better estimate of the overall time for this service visit. As a matter of normal service process, an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will also check for other repair measures which might be applicable to your vehicle and this may increase the required working time.
