The steering shaft disconnecting from the steering gear can cause a sudden loss of steering control, increasing risk of a crash.

Summary
Daimler Vans USA, LLC (Daimler Vans) is recalling certain 2019 Mercedes-Benz
Sprinter VS30 vehicles. The steering shaft that connects to the steering gear may disconnect without warning.
Remedy
Daimler Vans will notify owners, advising them to stop driving the vehicle immediately. Dealers will inspect the bolts connecting the steering shaft to the steering gear, fully tightening and/or adjusting them, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began February 15, 2019. Owners may contact Daimler Van’s customer service at 1-800-367-6372. Daimler Van’s number for this recall is 2019010006.

Loaner and demonstrator vehicles should not be driven, and must not be retailed until repaired. Daimler AG, the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vans, determined that in certain Mercedes-Benz
Sprinter vehicles (VS30, Platform 907) for the US market, the bolt connection between the steering shaft and the steering gear may not have been sufficiently tightened according to specification. A loosening of the bolt connection between the steering shaft and the steering gear could lead to a sudden and complete loss of steering function. In the event of steering failure, there is an increased crash risk. All affected vehicles are under an immediate stop sale and stop drive. We kindly ask you to check the bolt connection between the steering shaft and the steering gear on the potentially affected vehicles to ensure that it is torqued according to specification. Alternatively, the bolt connection may need to be restored. Customers are being asked to contact the nearest authorized Mercedes-Benz
Sprinter dealer to arrange for the vehicle to be either towed to the dealership or to have a direct check & repair at the customerโs location. Owners will be advised to stop driving the vehicle immediately.
Once all necessary steps have been completed, the vehicle is safe to be released. Please be aware that warranty claims should not be processed prior to Monday, February 4.
Prior to performing this Recall Campaign:
- Please check VMI to determine if the vehicle is involved in the Campaign and if it has been previously repaired.
- Please review the entire Recall Campaign bulletin and follow the repair procedure exactly as described.
Please note that Recall Campaigns do not expire and may also be performed on a vehicle with a vehicle status indicator.

To do this, turn in the steering until the respective screw (4, 5) is visible and accessible. Then check both universal joints (2, 3) for correct seating (see picture). The gearing (arrow) must not be visible.
