Power Steering may Malfunction and be Disabled

If the power steering assist is unexpectedly disabled, it may increase the risk of a crash.

 

Summary

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2017 E300, S65 AMG Coupe, S550, S65 AMG Cabriolet, S550 Cabriolet, S550e, S65 AMG, and Mercedes-Maybach S600 vehicles. A transistor within the power steering control unit may overheat resulting in the power steering system being disabled.

 

Remedy

MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the steering rack, replace it as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in January 2018. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-877-496-3691.

This is to notify you of a new Recall Campaign Launch to inspect the steering rack and replace, if necessary, on 73 MY 2017, Model 213, 217, 222 (E-Class, S-Class Coupe, S-Class) vehicles. Please review the recall information below. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on  February 2, 2018.
Background
Issue		Daimler AG, the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain EClass (213 platform) and S-Class (217/222 platform) vehicles, a bracket for a transistor in the power steering control unit may have been manufactured outside specifications. The bracket durability may be affected and could subsequently break due to vibrations and temperature variations during vehicle operation. In such an event, the cooling of the transistor would be impaired.
What We’re Doing		MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall.  An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will inspect the steering rack and replace, if necessary on the affected vehicles.
Parts		Parts are available and can be ordered as necessary.

Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY17 E-Class, S-Class Coupe, S-Class vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.  Once remedy parts are available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in Star TekInfo. Once the repair is complete, the vehicle may be sold or leased.   Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired.     Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new MY17 E-Class, S-Class Coupe, S-Class vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

SUBJECT:	Models 213, 217, and 222 Model Year 2017 Power Steering ECU Transistor Bracket

 

Daimler AG, the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain E-Class (213 platform) and S-Class (217/222 platform) vehicles, a bracket for a transistor in the power steering control unit may have been manufactured outside specifications. The bracket durability may be affected and could subsequently break due to vibrations and temperature variations during vehicle operation. In such an event, the cooling of the transistor would be impaired. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will inspect the steering rack and replace, if necessary on the affected vehicles.

Prior to performing this Recall Campaign:

• Please check VMI to determine if the vehicle is involved in the Campaign and if it has been previously repaired.
• Please review the entire Recall Campaign bulletin and follow the repair procedure exactly as described.

Please note that Recall Campaigns do not expire and may also be performed on a vehicle with a vehicle status indicator.

Approximately 73 vehicles are involved.

 

Procedure

1.    Replace electric power steering.

Model 213: AR46.20-P-0600LW
Model 217: AR46.20-P-0600LF
Model 222: AR46.20-P-0600LF

After having replaced the steering, the serial number of the new steering gear must be documented on the work order.
