December 21, 2023 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 23V878000
Improper Seal May Allow Oil and Fuel to Leak
An inadequate seal can allow fuel and oil to leak onto the road, creating a hazard for other road users and increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, a fuel and oil leak in the presence of hot engine components can increase the risk of a fire.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V878
Manufacturer Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC
Components FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE, ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Potential Number of Units Affected 7
Summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2023 GLC300, 2024 GLE350, and GLE450 vehicles equipped with an M254 engine. The incorrect screws, installed on the high-pressure fuel pump, may prevent a proper seal from forming between the high-pressure fuel pump and the tandem oil pump.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the high-pressure fuel pump, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed February 19, 2024. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

Replace High-Pressure Fuel Pump
This is to notify you of the Recall Campaign Launch to replace the high-pressure fuel pump on 7 Model Year (“MY”) 2023-2024 GLC and GLE (254 and 167 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.NHTSA.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on January 26, 2024.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that in certain MY2023-2024 GLE (167 platform) and GLC (254 platform) vehicles with the M254 engine, the bolting of the high-pressure fuel pump might not meet current specifications. In this case, the seal formed between the high-pressure fuel pump and tandem oil pump might be impaired. Thus, fuel and oil might leak and potentially spill onto the roadway, increasing the risk of a crash for the following traffic. If fuel or oil comes into contact with hot components, a risk of fire cannot be ruled out.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will replace the high-pressure fuel pump on the potentially affected vehicles.
Parts
Remedy is not available at this time.
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in NetStar VMI and Xentry Portal. Once the repair is complete, the vehicle may be sold or leased.
Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s).
Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.
Customer Notification Timeline
Customer letters will be mailed on February 9, 2024.

Chronology :
In the beginning of October 2023, MBAG initiated initial investigations based on an internal quality review in an engine plant. This review revealed that the screws used to mount the high-pressure fuel pump in the engine plant might have been too long. Subsequently, investigations were initiated to determine potential consequences of the issue described. These investigations lasted until late November 2023 and determined, that the issue may result in a leakage of oil / fuel. In parallel, during November 2023, MBAG reviewed the fastening documentation together with the engine plant to determine which vehicles could potentially be affected. On December 15, 2023, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.
MBAG is currently aware of two warranty claims received on 06/13/2023 and 06/14/2023 related to this defect in the USA. MBAG determined that no injury, crash or fire were reported in these claims.

Replace High-Pressure Fuel Pump This is to notify you of the new Recall Campaign to replace the high-pressure fuel pump on 7 Model Year (“MY”) 2023-2024 GLC and GLE (254 and 167 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.NHTSA.gov website and may generate questions from customers.
Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “PENDING” on December 28, 2023.
Background
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that in certain Model Year (“MY”) 2023-2024 GLE (167 platform) and GLC (254 platform) vehicles with the M254 engine, the bolting of the high-pressure fuel pump might not meet current specifications. Issue What We’re Doing Parts In this case, the seal formed between the high-pressure fuel pump and tandem oil pump might be impaired. Thus, fuel and oil might leak and potentially spill onto the roadway, increasing the risk of a crash for the following traffic. If fuel or oil comes into contact with hot components, a risk of fire cannot be ruled out.
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will replace the high- pressure fuel pump on the potentially affected vehicles.

Replace High-Pressure Fuel Pump This is to notify you of the Recall Campaign Launch to replace the high-pressure fuel pump on 7 Model Year (“MY”) 2023-2024 GLC and GLE (254 and 167 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.NHTSA.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on January 26, 2024.
Background
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that in certain MY2023-2024 GLE (167 platform) and GLC (254 platform) vehicles with the M254 engine, the bolting of the high-pressure fuel pump might not meet current specifications. In this Issue What We’re Doing Parts case, the seal formed between the high-pressure fuel pump and tandem oil pump might be impaired. Thus, fuel and oil might leak and potentially spill onto the roadway, increasing the risk of a crash for the following traffic. If fuel or oil comes into contact with hot components, a risk of fire cannot be ruled out.
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will replace the high-pressure fuel pump on the potentially affected vehicles.
The remedy is available and can be performed.
