October 2, 2023 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 23V662000
Incorrectly Adjusted Headlights/FMVSS 108
Incorrectly adjusted headlights can reduce the visibility of oncoming traffic, increasing the risk of a crash.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V662
Manufacturer Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC
Components EXTERIOR LIGHTING
Potential Number of Units Affected 32
Summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2022 A220, GLA250, and AMG GLA35 vehicles. The headlights may be incorrectly adjusted. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.”
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and correct the headlight adjustment, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed November 28, 2023. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

Inspect Headlamp Adjustment
This is to notify you of the Recall Campaign Launch to adjust the headlamps on 32 Model Year (“MY”) 2022 A-Class and GLA (177 and 247 platform) vehicles. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.NHTSA.gov website and may generate questions from customers. Affected VINs will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on October 20, 2023.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacture of Mercedes-Benz
vehicles, has determined that on certain A-Class and GLA (177 and 247 platform) vehicles, the headlamp adjustment might not meet current production specifications. In this case, the headlamps might be adjusted slightly too high and exceed the range specified by FMVSS 108 S.10 by approximately 0.05%. A headlamp adjustment that is outside of specifications has the potential to create glare for oncoming traffic, which could increase the risk of a crash.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will inspect the headlamp adjustment on the affected vehicles and correct it, if necessary.
Parts
The remedy is available and can be performed.
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease any new vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired. Once the remedy is available, the vehicles will be flagged as “OPEN” and Work Instructions will be available in NetStar VMI and Xentry Portal. Once the repair is complete, the vehicle may be sold or leased.
Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. As a matter of normal service process, please check for other repair measures which might be applicable to the vehicle(s).
Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for car rental companies to rent new vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.
Customer Notification Timeline
Customer letters will be mailed on November 3, 2023.
Inspect Headlamp Adjustment
Work Procedure
- Inspect headlamp adjustment (left and right) and adjust if necessary.
For basic data, Model 247 AP82.10-P-8260AO and AP82.10–P–8263OF. For basic data, Model 177 AP82.10-P-8263xx and AP82.10-P-8260N.
Chronology :
In October 2021, MBAG launched initial investigations based on a finding from an internal standard check that indicated a slight deviation in the headlamp adjustment. Subsequently, the root cause of the deviation and possible influences on the headlamp adjustment system were analyzed together with the supplier.
MBAG’s initial analysis determined that the angle to which the headlamps were adjusted may have been slightly above or below production specifications. Based on that determination, MBAG initiated a plant rework measure to check headlamp adjustments in potentially affected vehicles and ensure headlamp adjustments for the vehicles still accessible by MBAG were completed in accordance with specifications.
MBAG monitored the field for indications of incidents potentially related to such headlamp adjustment. During this review one customer complaint, from outside of the US, was identified in the second half of 2022 in which the customer stated a deviation of the headlamps. In 2023, subsequent further review of plant action data, production records and service history of potentially affected vehicles showed that some vehicles’ headlamps might have been adjusted to exceed specified tolerances.
On September 22, 2023, MBAG determined that a non-compliance with FMVSS 108 cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.
MBAG is not aware of any warranty claims, field or service reports, crashes or reports of property damage, death, or injury in the US related to this FMVSS non-compliance.
