FMVSS 1 : NR Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-464 Page 2 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : In this case, the bolts that secure the rear seat belt buckles might loosen due to vibrations while driving, or in the event of a crash. As a result, the restraining effect of the rear seat belts might be impaired, increasing the risk of injury for vehicle occupants. Description of the Cause : Due to a deviation in the rework process, the bolts that secure the rear seat belt buckles might not meet torque specifications. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : The driver will not receive a warning due to the nature of the failure mechanism. Involved Components : Component Name 1 : Cylinder Screw with Flange Component Description : Cylinder Screw with Flange Component Part Number : A0009908115 Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : Mercedes-Benz AG Address : NR Foreign States Country : Germany Chronology : At the end of April 2023, MBAG launched initial investigations based on a finding during internal analyses for quality assurance at the production plant. This finding indicated a loose rear seat belt buckle bolt connection. Immediately, analyses were started to determine the root cause. It was found that this specific vehicle had been reworked in the production plant. Bolt torque data from the affected rear seat belts and rework documentation were analyzed to identify suspect torque values. In May 2023, potentially affected vehicles were determined through these records. No field cases were reported. On June 23, 2023, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall. Pursuant to 49 C.F.R. § 577.11(e), MBUSA does not plan to provide notice about pre-notice reimbursement to owners since none of the involved vehicles would have been previously subject to the condition described and all remain covered under the new vehicle warranty.
