Replace Front Stationary Roof Panel
This is to notify you of a Recall Campaign Launch to replace the front stationary roof panel on 1 Model Year (“MY”) 2021 S-Class (223 platform) vehicle. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. The affected VIN will be flagged in VMI as “OPEN” on March 3, 2023.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on 1 Model Year (“MY”) 2021 S-Class (223 platform) vehicle, the fixed glass panel located between the windshield and the panoramic sunroof might not have been bonded according to specifications. The adhesion of the front fixed panel to the vehicle body might deteriorate gradually over time and could result in the front fixed panel partially or fully detaching from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash and/or injury for other road users. When the issue occurs, the customer might observe a partially detached front panel or wind noises in the area of the sunroof while driving.
What We’re Doing
MBUSA will conduct a voluntary recall. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will replace the front fixed panel on the affected vehicle.

Chronology :
At the end of 2022, MBAG found during a standard review that a small number of vehicles were not processed during a plant action in 2021. This plant action was initiated because the applied adhesive to bond the front sunroof panel had been revoked for this application in the plant reworking process.
In January 2023, MBAG conducted further internal discussions as to whether the bonding would withstand the vehicle life time. Further analyses were carried out to identify all potentially affected vehicles in the field. On February 10, 2023, MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.
MBAG can confirm there are no warranty claims, field or service reports, and other information (such as the numbers of deaths and/or injuries) related to this defect in the USA.

Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : As a precautionary measure, an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealership will
replace the front fixed panel on the affected vehicle and install it according to specifications.
Pursuant to 49 C.F.R. § 577.11(e), MBUSA does not plan to provide notice about pre-notice reimbursement to the owner since the vehicle would not have been previously subject to the condition described and all remain covered under the new vehicle warranty. How Remedy Component Differs New front fixed panels are installed with bonding adhesive according to
current production specification.
